Will Work For Food

Found on page 2 of the Sunday, Nov 5th issue of Parade Magazine:

Question: Why has Superman Returns' Brandon Routh fallen off the media radar since being favorably compared to Chris Reeve?
- Geri Smith, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Answer: Routh, 27, filled Reeve's tights but failed to put his own stamp on the role. Our advice: Choose a serious acting challenge for your next role and raise your asking price. His paltry Superman salary (reportedly $1 million or less) led some to dub Routh "the Man of Steal."
Superstitious people might want to blame Routh's disturbing disappearing act from public view as portends of the infamous Superman Curse, but we here at SSS tend to think it has more earthly causes. Too bad Singer didn't give him something better to work with.

Don't be too hard on Routh SSS. He was just doing what he was told. I'm sure he didn't sign on for this Super Daddy bullshit, but thought "what the hell, it pays the bills."

If singer gave him a chance to step outside of that Reeve impersonation, I swear it would have been for the better. Unfortunately after all is said and done, I barely remember anything super about him. Supergirl left a bigger impression on me.

My mistake, SSS didn't post this. I meant you, ClarkKent-IS-Superman.

"Question: Why has Superman Returns' Brandon Ruth fallen off the media radar since being favorably compared to Chris Reeve?"

Well the easy answer is that it did not make enough money. Everything was Pirates crazy this summer. I think the general perception of Routh is that he did a good job in a movie that greatly underachieved at the BO.

It doesn't end there. A movie that greatly retreaded an old movie and and greatly mediocre Superman film after decades of waiting and years of development hell.

This movie was a disgrace to Superman. All involved should be ashamed of what they've done to an American Icon. You too, Rough.

RIP Superman

"RIP Superman"

He will be around for many years to come, hell if the Hulk movie didn't kill him, SR sure won't kill Superman.

Anonymous said...

Nope, he's dead. Fans are jaded and don't realize it yet, but superman's return was a bust and Singer practically killed Superman's chances potential at the movies.

The animated superman isn't dead though but will be soon when he battles doomsday.

Routh is disappearing because he really is a just a mediocre actor, and sadly, bland.

Even his voice over this last weekend on the kids WB Batman series was dull.

Routh really is just superblandman.

And of course, he really can't act.

In Superman Returns Again we will see superman choose an alternative lifestyle as Zod becomes his lover.

2 things for you, a movie that made 200 mil is not a bust regardless of budget, 200 mil means people were intersted in seeing it. Secondly if Superman 3 and especially 4 did not kill Superman at the movies, SR sure won't do it.

Anonymous said...

actually Superman 4 did kill Superman at the movies for 20 some odd years.....

$200 million dollars IS a bust, especially counting how LONG it took to get that number.

What people were "interested" in seeing it? Not the average movie-goer, as Pirates brought in what, twice that?

200 mil is not a bust period, it could have taken a year to get there and that number means, the same thing people were interested in seeing it. Pirates made more money than everything this summer. It has outgrossed WW all of the Star Wars movies for god's sake. I understand that SR underperformed at the BO but what can you compare to Pirates that put's it to shame, Titanic is about it. Do not compare SR to Superman 4. That film made 15 mil at the BO which even with inflation is only 30 mil today.

Oh god Superman 4 sucked ass, on the DVD you can see the fucking wires, in almost every shot, it was so cheaply made. I didn't love SR but the effects in it alone make it twice as good as Superman 4.

The fx in returns are already outdated and look fake. I'd say they're barely a few notches above what was done back in the 80s for superman IV. Just look at how cheap that shot of SuperDad lifting the boat was. He just stood on a set with water being drained out of it. Wow!

Anonymous said...

$200 million means "people wanted to see it"? Do you even know what you are saying?

If people "wanted to see it", the numbers would have been MUCH higher. And you CANNOT disregard Pirates, as they were in DIRECT competition with each other. Singerman was NOT what people were looking for in a Superman film. To think otherwise is foolish.

Anonymous said...

Do schools not teach Reading Comprehension anymore???

Saying it was a bust is not saying people didn't go see it.

Saying it was a bust is like saying it was the new Hulk or King Kong.

Long boring pretentious movies that didn't meet expectations. And it's true.

Singerman is the King Hulk of this summer.

Of course it will have a sequel. Hulk is getting one too, but that doesn't really change how it was a dissapointment for everyone on some level.

The sequel will have more Superman Smash, but it's too late in my opinion. You dropped a kid on superman and shackled him down to the cheesy continuity of the donner franchise. Good luck keeping people interested in that.

Anonymous said...

There's still hope so it's not a total bust. WB just needs a new director and a fresh start. Use that vague history excuse to erase Returns and we can start over.

Anonymous said...

Ok, not a bust but a great misstep.

Anonymous said...

Nope. It was a bust.

That may be the most retarded statement i have ever read. Yeah i am sure when the plane sequence was happening you were thinking these effects really suck. Pop in Superman 4 on DVD, count how many times Superman is in space and you can see the fucking wires and then come back and try and tell me SR effects do not blow that out of the water. You do know that the budget for Superman 4 was slashed at the last minute and everyone involved knew the effects were going to be terrible months before it came out. I say again i am not discounting Pirates i am saying you can not compare SR to Pirates as a measuring stick for it's success unless your prepared to do it to many other movies. BB made 371 mil WW not competing against Pirates or anything that even came close to it. Care to guess what the hell that would have made if it had been competing with Pirates.

Anonymous said...

Ah, the rantings of a TRUE "Apologist".

Hey genius, why exactly do you "have to" compare Pirates to OTHER comic films it WAS NOT COMPETING AGAINST? Singerman WAS, and it FAILED MISERABLY.

And since you want to talk SFX, the end, where Singerman is flying through the clouds, was so obviously fake people actually LAUGHED. It was so lame, how did they let THAT stay in this turd-fest?

Anonymous said...

"Hey genius, why exactly do you "have to" compare Pirates to OTHER comic films it WAS NOT COMPETING AGAINST? Singerman WAS, and it FAILED MISERABLY."

Hey genius let me ask it again since you failed to answer. If Pirates crushed SR at the BO and it still made 20 mil more than BB. What the hell was BB going to make if had to compete with Pirates. You can easily make the case that SR was more accepted by the public than BB because it made more money up against much fiercer competition. If you don't think competition effects profit I suggest you enroll in some business classes ASAP. You may not have been impressed with SR effects but they were vastly superior to anything we have ever seen in a Superman movie, you can try to argue that but you would fail.

Anonymous said...

Hey moron, you can play the "what if" game ALL you want, doesn't change the fact that Singerman Peeps got crushed.

And the effects in Singerman BLEW in comparison to S:TM. Want to know why? They used ACTUAL EFFECTS, not some half-ass CGI. BAD CGI at that.

Anonymous said...

"Hey moron, you can play the "what if" game ALL you want, doesn't change the fact that Singerman Peeps got crushed."

Yeah which is code for my argument beat the shit out of your's. 200 mil is not a flop no matter how much you idiots want to spin that. The public does not invest 391 mil WW in a movie that they hate. Your comments about the effects comparison are clearly just to get a reaction out of me. Anyone with eyes that function properly will tell you SR effects blow all the other Superman movie effects away. It is like saying you think Rosie O'donnell is hotter than Angelina Jolie.

Anonymous said...

Your "argument"? Man, do you "Apologists" get dumber by the hour??

$200 million IS a flop, no matter how hard you try to "spin" it. Your lack of an education already shows you have NO CLUE how things work in the real world. Since it DID NOT make back it's production costs state-side, it FLOPPED. Period. Save your "spin" for people who are as clueless as you.

The only part you got right in your idiotic rant was "SR effects blow".

If by production cost you are referring to it's budget and marketing cost, then SR did not make that back. Guess what neither did BB or X3. BB would have made a lot more profit for WB had it not flopped badly overseas only making 166 mil. You have to factor in the overseas totals as well, because most big budget movies when factoring in marketing and budget do not make that back domestic.

Production budget yes, but with marketing costs it was not even close.

Where are your numbers to back that claim up?

"Where are your numbers to back that claim up?"

BB marketing costs were 100 mil. There are many links to back that up this is one of them.

Arguing about the fx in Returns is mostly pointless. Sure the cgi superman was obviously cgi. Personally though I couldn't see a damn thing in the movie since it was so dark though.

Singer, You're supposed to use more than a goddam flashlight to light a SUPERMAN MOVIE, he's one of the brightest comic heros ever.

I agree it was too dark, they supposedly made it brighter for the DVD.

If they're trying to fix the movie after release, they should delete Jason, cut out the stalker crap, cut out the dog stuff, put back in the krypton exploration scene, give superman a better reason for leaving for years than just "some scientist took a wild guess", completely re-do lex to be Lex luthor and not Anna Nichole Smith/Hackman, and awww screw it, just do a completely different movie.

I never had a problem with Superman having a son. I agree about the stalker stuff that was dumb. Lex's plot should have been more explained it was pretty lame. Them fixing the color will make the effects better so i like that. All in all i will buy the DVD but i was hoping for a hell of a lot more than i got from the movie.
