Box Office Update: IMAX Life Support

It's been a couple crazy weeks around here recently, so postings have been few and far between, but rest assured we're working on some doozies for you. In the meantime, let's check in at the Singerman box office.

In its 11th weekend at the domestic box office, Singerman took in a whopping $453,273, and its total domestic take still sits at a disappointing $197,430,626. Frankly we're a little surpised that it's gotten this far based on how it was tracking earlier. Looking at the statistics, we can see its barely in many theaters (241) and hasn't been for a few weeks now. Where has the money come from the past 3 weeks you ask? The answer: IMAX. That's basically all Singerman is left in at this point, and that's because it's contracted to be there per a WB agreement with IMAX, as are a few of the other disappointing WB summer releases like The Ant Bully. We dont know what WB paid IMAX for that this summer, but whatever it is it's not enough, and they're going to owe them BIG TIME come time for the next contract, as IMAX has pretty much saved their summer slate from total embarassment by adding a nice chunk to their disappointing films bottom lines.

Does this mean Singerman finally found "legs" on IMAX? No, not at all. That term refers to a film's stint in traditional theaters. IMAX is less about the quality of the film in the theater and more about the experience of the visuals in the film with the huge screen, 3-D, etc. Why do you think people go to those theaters to watch 2 hour movies on honey bees? Singerman's moping must even look cool in 3-D, though we seriously doubt it. Expect IMAX to have WB over a barrel when the next contract comes up for negotiation.

As for the obligatory Batman Begins comparison, in Begins 11th weekend at the U.S. box office it took in $445,373, or about 1.8% less, for a total domestic take of $203,019,055, or about 3.8% more. Keep in mind Begins had a more limited IMAX release and didn't have the benefit of having 3-D footage in it, oh yeah and the fact that it cost CONSIDERABLY less to make and market. Should be fun to see how this one finishes out since Begins spiked up again in its 12th and 13th weekend at the B.O..

Funny how you forgot to mention that the "novelty" of 3D Imax did not help out "Ant Bully" maybe SR deserves a little more credit then your sorry #$% gives it credit for!

P.S. look at the average per theatre take and mention that also you fanboy clown!

what does per theater average mean at this point with the film only in IMAX?

As for Ant Bully, did it even have 3D scenes in it???

This guy is just bitter that SR has outgrossed his beloved Batman Begins by 15 mil Worldwide and counting, despite it's competition.

wow $15 million more gross, when it only cost $100+ million more to make and market. Makes sense.

SR cost about 50 mil more to make i have read they both cost huge numbers to market nobody knows what those official numbers are it is all just speculation. SR deserves more credit than it is getting did BB go up against a billion dollar WW movie at the same time, not hardly.

Expectations for SR were higher than BB but the truth is the Superhero movie Genre is in trouble. BB is getting a sequel but it was not a blockbuster by any means, X3, opened huge and then sank like a stone and SR underpeformed. Spiderman 3 will probably be big but by 2009 when SR 2 is supposed to come out the Genre may be so played out nobody will care about Superhero movies at all anymore.

I agree on some of those points, to me the biggest problem with this Genre is the overseas take of these films is not very high. With the excpetion of the 2 Spiderman films both making over 400 mil overseas, no other Superhero movie since 2000 has even made 250 mil overseas. That includes all the X-Men movies, Batman Begins, the Hulk and now Superman Returns. These movies cost so much to make and they are so dependant on big domestic takes because the money for some reason overseas is just not there.

This is probably the single best arguement I've heard on this blog as to why it failed. Not because Singer is gay but an honest to GOD thought out answer..That's what makes debating fun..

"That was a good arguement but as a Superman fan i hope he is wrong since i want to see more Superman movies. I loved SR but still admit it had it's flaws that i think can be improved next time around. I think the BB sequel will be very telling at the BO in 2008 as to where the superhero genre is at with the fans. "

I completely agree. I know alot of people on here don't think that BS can improve it because of his ego, but I just don't see that happening. I see him taking the complaints to heart and really giving us a Superman movie unlike anything we've ever seen. Yeah BB will be telling for SR's sequel as well. If that flops(which I highly doubt) or is a dissapointment then the superhero genre may have to take a break for a bit. I mean you have movies like GHOST RIDER being made. This is not a well known comic book character and I very much doubt it will garner an audience. I think Hollywood needs to slow down and only do movies for the really popular Comic book characters like Green Lantern...Where the hell is that movie?

Why can't he? Because he has a "vision". What is that "vision" you ask? To make Superman as un-masculine as possible.

So far, he has succeeded.

What? You can't see his point? He said "un-masculine", translation "GAY". It's the same arguement.

Also people who like SR are not apologists. They truthfully liked the film while recognizing it's flaws. Why is it that we, the people who like it, can see it's flaws and do point them out as wee see them, but the people who hated it just can't say anything good about the film? It's being treated like it's the worst film of all time, and the only reason I'm seeing for this reaction on here is because they think he's GAY. Just because the director is GAY.

Like I've said before I like reading people's differing opinions because it can provide very good discussion, but for some reason all the people who hated this movie don't want to have an intelligent discussion about the film. All they say is he's a fag, he's gay. I'm not talking about the creators of this blog because he has stated why he doesn't like the film, but it just seems that the people who are commenting on here that hate it just can't get past the GAY argument.
