The Singerman Ripple Effect?

<-- Singer seems to have gotten some practice hanging on to Singerman. Hey may need it.

Well it's been quite the bloodbath the past few days over at the W.B. Studios Superhero Department. Last Friday, Joss Whedon announced that he'd been relieved of his duties on the long-in-development Wonder Woman project. The following day David Goyer announced on his MySpace page that he and W.B. have gone their separate ways on doing The Flash film. Then on Monday they announced that they've brought in Shawn Levy to helm the project.

While there's noting truly earth-shattering about a film changing directors, it's the timing and the apparent reasoning behind the changes that caught our attention. Some of the reasons for the "irreconcilable differences" sound AWFULLY familiar to some of the criticisms people had of Singerman. Coincidence? Perhaps not. Check out what Whedon had to say on his website about his dismissal:
"I had a take on the film that, well, nobody liked.

We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work. Non-sympatico. It happens all the time. I don't think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk."
Now what is Whedon's writing style? And what do Buffy, Angel, and Serenity all have in common? That's right they have a dark, edgy tone to the characters. Also keep in mind this was just days after it was announced that WB had purchased a Wonder Woman spec script to allegedly avoid any copyright issues with Whedon's. Latino Review got a hold of that spec script and reviewed it as:
"The spec that Silver picked up ROCKS! A fun filled adventure packed girl power action movie in the 1940s! 1943 to be exact...Overall, a very great read. The writers did their homework. As a comic book character origin movie - it is just as good as Batman Begins.I can see why Silver supposedly took it off the spec market. If I was a betting man, I figure this is the origin story that Warners might stick with. My note to the studio is to not touch the script, leave it intact, get yourself a good director and shoot this script. It is all there on the page."
LR also points out that WB buys this excellent spec script and says something along the lines of committing to Whedon’s contemporary version, then the very next day Whedon is off the project. Why would you take a spec off the market when you own the rights already?

Now let's compare that to what went down on The Flash project. On his MySpace Goyer is quoted as saying:
Well, I've been waiting a few months to relate this news -- but I am sad to say that my version of The Flash is dead at WB. The God's honest truth is that WB and myself simply couldn't agree on what would make for a cool Flash film. I'm quite proud of the screenplay I turned it. I threw my heart into it and I genuinely think it would've been the basis of a ground-breaking film. But as of now, the studio is heading off in a completely different direction.
Sound familiar? The following day it comes out that Shawn Levy will be replacing him, and The Hollywood Reporter tells us that:
"Despite Levy's previous films, including Cheaper by the Dozen and The Pink Panther, they have "no intention of making Flash a comedy," but they do intend to "aim for a lighter movie than previous Warners Bros comic adaptations, such as Batman Begins and Superman Returns." Goyer was in part responsible for the former's script, his Flash was said to be "dark themed" as well."
Hmmm, sensing a theme between these two? A lighter, more action-oriented film? Didn't like the previous director's dark, overly serious take on a historically "lighter" character? Who does that sound like? Yup that's right folks, Singerman.

While Batman is a hero historically depicted to be of a darker and more cerebral nature lending himself to a writer like Goyer, characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and the Flash are not. Wonder Woman and the Flash were slated to be WB's next big new superhero franchises launched after Singerman, but now seem to be years away from seeing the light of day. Is WB trying to avoid repeating the mistakes that it made with Singerman especially now that most of the damage from the lackluster box office and home video sales has been assessed by the studio's bean counters?

It seems to me that there's a MAJOR rethinking of the studio's comic book projects not named Batman at this point, thanks in great part to some of the major shortcomings of Singerman. Whedon and Goyer were both paid millions of dollars for their efforts, so the fact that Singer signed on to write the script for the sequel doesn't exactly assure him of helming the project. We can only hope that someone out there writes an outstanding spec script for an actual Superman film, and WB kicks Singer to the curb.

Hey, love the blog.

Although I do like Joss Whedon I've been somewhat ambivilant to the idea of him doing Wonder Woman as I've feared a repeat of Singerman once again. That said, I don't really much care for the idea of a period piece for Wonder Woman. Hopefully they'll change it during the rewrite and revision stage.

Let's hope Warners are responding to the obvious failings of Superman Returns. Let's hope Singer and Jon Peters (who by his own admission, knows nothing about Superman) are shown the door quick smart.

That'll have Singer following in the footsteps of Joel Schumacher

Actually, reading Latino Reviews', well, review, it doesn't sound too bad for WW. The only problem is, it establishes her as the FIRST "superhero". And we know that isn't the case, so if they want to do a JLA movie one day that's going to be weird.

Hey, anyone think it's funny that what WB is doing, coincides with the almost GUARANTEED belief BS is next to go?

Do any of the idiot "Apologists" REALLY think WB is going to let BS do what he wants now? Do they think BS is going to bend to their wishes? I think not.

He'll take his coke habit and young men elsewhere.

Singer will return. They brought Tim Burton Back as Executive Producer after the hideous "batman returns". So superman returns was a little off. It made tons of money and you geeks will see the next movie regardless who makes it am I right?

Wow, this ENTIRE post is summed up in one word: WRONG.

BS will NOT be back. Batman Returns is FAR superior to Singerman Peeps, and no one with a fully-functioning brain will go see this "film" after seeing the first one.

And "tons of money"?? Jesus idiot, stay off of Bluetights. That corporate shill-whore of a site is full of WB AND BS "Apologists". Use your OWN brain occasionally, ok?

Considering that the best written scenes from "Singerman" were written by JJ Abrams, the top of the DP, the plane catch, can anyone really believe that Warner's will allow BS(love the irony) and his hack writers a second chance to screw up Supes is astounding.

Bad writing, bad concept, truly bad acting for the most part, and it gets a sequel. The film still has lost money, so again: a sequel. Not.

I have friends who went to film school with Singer, and have worked with him since, and they didn't like the movie. They were astounded with how boring, and bad it really was.

ApologistPuncher said...

Of course it is a bad "film". The only people who "like" it are either sub-par intelligent, or THINK they are somehow more "enlightened" than everyone else.

What they don't realize is they ALSO fall into the first category.

ApologistPuncher said...

Can't wait for the day BS "drops out". "Apologist" tears will be flowing, that's for sure...

Anonymous said...

Ok 2 questions which was worse "Batman" or "superman" Returns. I think Batman Returns was much worse with The Penquin running for mayor, Horrific cat woman, bad dialog, and Pegquins with Rockets!!!

I dont know if Singer will return or not. But if WB made Superman III then made Superman IV any kind of stupidity is possible.

I have to admit, as soon as news broke of Goyer and Whedon leaving their respective DC projects, I couldn't help but sense that Singer's long shadow loomed over the whole ordeal.

The other similarities between Whedon/Goyer and Singer are that they have singular visions for their movies and are known for re-invigorating other genre-oriented properties (Whedon for Buffy, Goyer for Blade and BB and Singer for X-Men). WB's failure with Singer has made them reconsider going with the laissez-faire approach.

I'm of two minds about this. While I was always weary of Whedon's take on WW (I never drank the Kool Aid on Buffy), I thought Goyer's take on Flash could've been intriguing. Also, Singer's failure means that WB will have more proverbial cooks in the kitchen, and that's never a good idea.

ApologistPuncher said...

I predicted months ago that BS will be gone, and he WILL be.

It's obvious WB isn't going to give ANYONE not named Nolan "free reign" over their comic book properties. BS had HIS chance, and ruined it for everyone else.

And he WON'T be making the sequel, jackass. Are the signs not OBVIOUS to you yet? Little slow are we?

^Actually I think there's still a good chance BS will come back unfortunately. The alternative would be to risk the possibility of having this franchise go back into limbo again, and from a financial perspective that's easily the worst option.
At this point alot of it probably hinges on what BS plans to do now. His removal "may" have been discussed at some point behind the scenes, but I highly doubt they'll just drop him unless they have a definite new direction.

ApologistPuncher said...

Actually, there is not. I can't believe I have to point this out, but WB is CLEARLY showing a more "hands on" approach to their properties. They are NOT going to let BS do what he wants, and I can assure you BS won't do EVERYTHING they want.

No one is saying he will be KICKED OFF, I have ALWAYS said he will "drop out", most likely citing "time". Hollywood speak for "I quit".

Total Film names SR "Film of the Year"
posted by Justin on 02/05/07

TotalFilm has named Superman Returns their "Film of the Year" in their 2006 Readers' Awards. Additionally, they awarded Superman Returns star Brandon Routh as the "Breakout Movie Star" of 2006.
"This is very cool," says Superman. Sorry: Brandon Routh. The soaraway winner of the vote for Breakout Star, Routh exceeded expectations as the redux Clark Kent, matching Reeves' bumbling innocence and arguably out-muscling the original star in the epic action scenes... You clearly adored Bryan Singer's re-forging of the Man Of Steel, powering Superman Returns to Best Movie, too. "It's always cool to get awards from fans, from people who know what's going on," grins Routh. "And they're film aficionados if they're reading Total Film. We're very flattered."

POst this SSS. Singer wins!!!

The problem is there is no gray area for some fanbases. I don't understand this whole idea here that if you loved it you don't know Superman. I have read the comic for more than 10 years steadily and i really enjoyed the movie. I don't subscribe to the idea that Superman is not allowed to have a kid, why because it is not in the comics they are not allowed to do it in the movies. Batman in 1989 was so far removed from the comics it was crazy and most people seemed to like it. Now obviously you can not have that kid flying around like Superboy but Singer is not going in that direction and if he tried i doubt WB would let it happen. They learned their lesson with over the top camp with Batman and Robin. I think the sequel has excellent potential especially if they give us a great supervillain that we have never seen in a Superman movie before, like Darkseid or Brainiac.

Singer isn't going to leave the franchise completely. I think at worst he steps down as director but stays on as producer. If Bryan Singer steps down, it will be his choice. Even if it's not, they will announce it as his choice. They don't need the bad publicity turning down yet another script for a superman movie would generate.

All of this is moot anyway, because no matter what anyone says nobody has any idea what the studio is going to do. Personally if they were going to get rid of BS from the start then why wait? I would want to get the search out for a new director and team of writers immediately if I were WB's.

True, but like I said..If Warners is so dead set against repeating the mistakes that some say they made, then why wait? Get started on finding a new script writer as soon as possible.

I just think they are going to give BS a chance to come up with a script that has more action, and can come in at a reasonable budget. No matter who is doing the sequel, the budget is going to be bigger because it's Superman and it's very hard to use practical effects (It's a movie so the powers have to be somewhat showie).

Like I said...He may very well leave as director but don't think for one moment he is going to completely leave. He'll stay on as producer.

Wrong. Since Jon Peters is Producer, BS will NOT take his place.

Watch the same thing happen that happened to Whedon. Someon ELSE will write a SUPERIOR script, WB will say "Use this!", BS will say "Umm, seriously, no way.". WB will say "Take a hike". the reason WB wouldnt be in a rush to hget a new script, writers, director, etc is because this franchise hasnt exactly proved itself a hot commodity. It's not like this is the Batman franchise coming off the first 2 films that made mega money and then Burton had a falling out with WB. This is a big budget franchise that's barely sputtered past the break even point.
If anything I'd think that they'd take their time and review what went wrong instead of just throwing more money at the problem.

Well since WB has already publically stated that they thought SR should have had more action and Singer has also said he plans an a action packed sequel i would expect that is what will develop. I really don't see Singer leaving. Prior to SR the man had an almost impeccible reputation especially with what he did with the X-Men movies. I know people here hate him but you have to remember X2 was viewed as a far better movie than X-Men. I mean at the end of the day when you sift through some of the hurt feelings SR got really good reviews and made more money than Batman Begins. I don't expect Singer to be going anywhere at least for one more Superman movie.

If you THINK for ONE second WB is going to say "One more chance for you, then no more young man..", with one hand on their hip and wagging their finger, you are SADLY mistaken.

REVIEWS mean zilch to WB. MONEY TALKS in Hollywood, and Singerman Peeps, luckily, didn't have much to say.

Anonymous said...

Yeah money walks, but if this movie had more cost control and there wasn't the other failed start ups attached to this ones budget, making 391 million WW would be a decent take for a first movie.

I may be an apologist for the movie, but even I can admit that he's not a lock to return. Now I also firmly believe that they are going to give him the first crack at it. And if his sequel has the action, and comes in at a budget of..say..175 million, then they will go with him.

This movie has to have more action. Period. And it has to come in at a decent price. Period. If Singer can do that and his script addresses the concerns of the studio(who we have to remember is sharing the loss/profits with Singers studio) then he will get the green light.

ApologistPuncher said...

And WHO is responsible for the budget? EXACTLY.

Someone else will write a script WB will feel more "comfortable" putting money behind. BS will get pissy because his and the Wonder Twins script won't be used, and he WILL walk.

BS had his chance, and he failed. A Superman movie was all but ASSURED to be a blockbuster. Due to BS' "vision", that DID NOT come to pass.

He won't get a second chance.

That could happen..But BS will get the first shot of writing the sequel. Whether or not they say yes nobody knows. Not even you.

Learn from the Whedon example. He's gone, and I for one will count the days until he is.

"Learn from the Whedon example. He's gone, and I for one will count the days until he is. "

I wonder, and I'm not saying this ass an excuse or anything, but I wonder if the fact that it was Wonder Woman had anything to do with it. I mean, female superhero movies don't do that well, and I'm not sure that WW can be translated well enough to the screen to be worth the investment.

Now the Flash movie being stopped is more of a red flag then WW for SR.

Anonymous said...

heh...meant to say as and not ass..

Anonymous said...

As somebody stated earlier, Smallville has the demographic. Why Warners don't spin that off to the big screen is beyond me(without Lana!). Just about any random episode has more action than the 2&1/2 hour dirge of SR

Anonymous said...

the whole "WB says there's going to be more action in the sequel" thing makes me laugh. More action = more special FX. More special FX means the movie is going to cost more.
Singer had approx $210 million to play with on the 1st film and it had less action than a cripple porno.

Many media sources who've talked to the studio have already come out and said the budget for the second film would be slashed, Likely somewhere in the $160-$175 million range if I remember correctly.
How the hell is Singer going to give you more action with less money?

It's either A)Not going to happen. Singer may even put it in the script, but it may get slashed to fit under budget, or B)the film is going to have a lot of action with REALLY shitty special FX. I'm not sure which alternative is worse??

ApologistPuncher said...

They BOTH are horrible, since you included BS' name in A and B.

ApologistPuncher said...

Hey, got a question for SOME of you: In last night's episode of Smallville, did you notice the "rogue" bodyguard looked eerily like BJ Routh?

This isn't for the "Apologists" to start whining, but for anyone who taped it, watch it again and see if in some scenes he REALLY DOES look like him.

Anonymous said...

yeah kind of. I think that guy normally plays Johnny Drama's agent on Entourage...

ApologistPuncher said...

And the funny thing is, he's playing a "creepy stalker"....

Its been announced the sequel is green lite. haha

ApologistPuncher said...

Of course you have "proof", right? Oh wait, of course you DON'T.

And what movie is "green lite" a sequel to??

Go fuck yourself, junior.

Why don't they get Brandon Routh to play Wonder Woman? I mean he already has the part of an effeminate, pussy superhero down.

ApologistPuncher said...

Because he won't have a full-body condom to cover the muscle suit this time?

Mark Stetson talks Oscars
posted by Justin on 02/09/07

CGSociety has an article up about the 2007 Oscar Nominees for Best Visual Effects. First up on their list is Mark Stetson, Visual Effects Supervisor for Superman Returns. In the interview, Stetson discusses preparing his reel for the Academy.
"In my introductory comments at the bakeoff," Stetson says, "I talked about all the scenes I had to cut from the demo reel to end up with 15 minutes. On the first cut, I chopped off all the fat and left only the meaty visual effects shots and I still had a half-hour reel. I had to cut a lot of great stuff."

Even so, he believes the bakeoff voters recognized the scope of the work, the integration of the effects into the story, and the quality of the work.

"We had a bunch of environments," he says, "from a Kansas cornfield to the crystal environments. We had the sky over the eastern seaboard of Manhattan. We had ocean work for a sea rescue that Rhythm & Hues did. Ocean work and crystal island that Framestore CFC's did. It was a huge body of work. Every place the movie took you was another visual effects environment."

OSCAR FOR BEST VISUAL EFFECTS. Yeah they will get rid of Singer who will win an oscar for this movie. No marvel movie can admit that. Including the kiddie movie "spiderman"

Singer's vision will return in 2009!

REstart

Hey look everyone, it's BS' favorite "ladyboy" back to shovel his bullshit!

Singerman Peeps will win NO Oscar, you "Apologist" douchebag. It didn't even DESERVE to be nominated. Pirates will win that one with ease.

The tears that will flow from you "Apologists" will be sweet, sweet vindication to those of us with a brain.

Fuck you, and fuck Bluetights too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you...I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out where I had seen him before...It's a shame he was on one of the most boring episodes of SMallville in a long time.

Oh yeah, BS has NOTHING to do with Smallville.

ummm hey genius, Spider-man DID win the Oscar for Best Visual FX.. great quote there though getting the guy who worked on the Singerman FX to say how good they are....

Singer is interested in doing the Wonder Woman movie. He actually wants to do the same thing to Wonder Woman that he did to Superman so he's going to cast Rosie O'Donnell as Wonder Woman.

See I told you "Spiderman" didnt win. "Superman Returns" will get its revenge on "Pirates" and give it a few years no one will remember the garbage of pirates just like Independence Day.

Return of Superman is coming in 2009!

I liked SR and i don't give a shit about an oscar for visual effects and i doubt WB does either. Pictures like this do not get nominated for any of the major awards. Hell you know Pirates was not getting any best picture nods since it's reviews were basically in the toilet.

Agreed! Superman Returns was not that bad of a movie, but dare you disagree with peoples opinion here they jump all over you. I know the sequel will be much better! But these people rather bury superman for 100 years that and fuck your dead mother, or nonexistant sister, or call you junior. I also heard in the big climax for the new WW movie is that she going to be lifting a big rock into space. I reckon it's going to be the best ending ever... Nothing will even come close.

I know the sequel will be much better!

How can it not get better with the piece of shit movie Singer gave us.

Superman: The Man of Steel, will be make or break time for Singer. I'm going to forget Superman Returns ever got made just like Superman3 and 4

...and the BAFTA for best special effects goes to...Pirates. Doesn't bode well for the rubbery looking CGI Singerman come Oscar time

I know the sequel will be much better!

how?? What has Singer done to give you this confidence? He put out a turd with $210 million to play with and any choice of story he wanted.

What's he going to do with $30-$40 million less now and the silly continuity that he and his writer buddies chose?

Plus, as it seems to be apparent from the axing of Whedon and Goyer, the studio is taking a bigger role in overseeing these high-cost comic book projects.

I dont see any reason to be confident in doing anything better.

Anonymous said...

"Plus, as it seems to be apparent from the axing of Whedon and Goyer, the studio is taking a bigger role in overseeing these high-cost comic book projects."

True but i think from what we have heard from WB they are going to approve a Singer Superman sequel if it is an action heavy movie. They seem to think that was a major problem with SR and if corrected will do far better at the BO. I am not sure they are wrong about that. Pirates 2 had a completely inferior story to the original but had far more action and made twice as much.

Anonymous said...

Right, I heard from Warners that they have to get rid of Bosworth because of the Razzie, get rid of the ridiculous looking costume and to get rid of the stupid kid. Also not to shoot it in digital "HD", or in Australia for that matter, and if they're going to spend so much on special effects, how about an award?

Ooh and to get rid of the director that turned out a Superman movie so gay it makes Steve Younis look straight.

Anonymous said...

LOL. Singer, Spacey and Routh really hit the gay scene hard in Sydney apparently.

Good luck to them. Shame they didn't put that much effort into the film

If you think that Pirates made all that money based on story you need your head examined. The reviews for that film were in the toilet compared to the original. It had 2 key elements that made it so successful. Tons of action for the guys and teen hearthrobs for the girls. BTW nice name although you obviously have no clue what the word apologist means because if you did you would not use that name. Unless that is you enjoy punching yourself.

Sorry dipshit, YOU are an "Apologist" piece of shit. Don't try that Bluetights spun "I know you are but what am I" bullshit here.

And the story in POTC2 was FAR superior to Singerman Peeps. At least they didn't bastardize the characters, or turn them into creepy stalkers who abuse their abilities.

Strike 3 and your out retard. An apologist is someone who defends a point of view. It makes no difference if it is positive or negative. Anytime you debate your hatred of the film with anyone who disagrees with you like right now you are being an apologist. He knows why they are called "Apologists". Their only tactic now is to run around like little kids saying "I know you are but what am I". Pretty sad.

Singerman Peeps DID indeed suck, but, like ALL "Apologists", it sucked BS' BALLS. And from what I hear, it ain't even a mouthful.

Anonymous said...

I think one of the major differences between Goyer/Whedon and Singer is that Goyer/Whedon are comic book fans that read comics and im more likely to trust someone who dose then someone who dosnt. That being said, im not much of a fan of Whedon. If he did do wonder women. It probably have WW doing all her enemies. Hell couldnt tell if Buffy was the a Vampire Slayer or a Vampire Screwer. Personally i really didnt like the idea of him doing wonder women. Goyer on the other hand has done some great stuff. The Blade movies where great and i think Batman Begin speaks for itself. But Overall i get SSS point.

ApologistPuncher said...

Well, Blade: Trinity was a HUGE letdown, and flushed Wesley Snipes' career down the toilet. But that had more to do with his actions OFF the set, rather than the film itself. I didn't realize he was such a racist.

But yes, Whedon on WW PROBABLY would not have been very true to the character. The script they are using now seems like a good, FUN WW movie. Fun, in a DC comic book movie? What a NOVEL idea.

Too bad BS was too self-centered to think of that....

Anonymous said...

I have to admit that Blade:Trinity wasnt that good and Goyer might not be the best one to do a Flash movie. I like the idea of doing a Retro storyline and it sounds alot better then Whedon's take. I think its hard to do a WW movie that set on modern times. Because the characters origins are so heavily influence by ww2. Unlike Superman and Batman where you set there story at any place or time. Wonder Women is better told in 1940's.
