JLA Film on the Fast-track?

While fans await news on the uncertain future of Singerman, Warner Bros. appears to have moved another property to the front burner.

On February 22, 2007, Variety reported that Kiernan and Michele Mulroney [pictured] were hired to write a preliminary script for a future Justice League film.

Now it seems less than four months later, a first draft has been submitted, and even Variety is speculating that the "superteam" might eclipse Singerman.

Here is the latest article on the film, as posted in Variety this past Friday, June 15th:

One of the more ambitious projects around town - the bigscreen adaptation of DC Comics' "Justice League" - cleared a major hurdle last week.

Husband-wife writing duo Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney turned in a first draft that had Warner Bros. suits actually smiling - no small feat, considering "Justice" follows a half-dozen of the best-known superheroes working together, including Batman and Superman.

But the accomplishment raises a tricky question for Warners: Should it release "Justice" before its "Superman Returns" sequel?

Christopher Nolan's next Batman pic "The Dark Knight" bows in July 2008. Bryan Singer's "Superman" follow-up had been expected to play in 2009. But there's no script yet for that pic, while Singer is busy getting ready to shot Tom Cruise starrer "Valkyrie" for UA.

The question now: Will a souped-up "Justice League" prove to be Kryptonite to Superman?

Superman fans know how much Singerman was 'teh suck.' We can only hope this news about a JLA film means Warner Bros. has finally realized it too.

Routh = Bizarro

Welling = Superman

Routh = Zero

What the fuck is a "Routh"??

Once again it is Smallville that is setting the trend for Supes on the sliver screen, If you can remember it was all the positive buzz from the Justice episode of SV that first started the Justice League film rumors.

It is a grand idea which would be awesome if done right but given DC's and Warners tendancy to take forever to get these damn things out it is unlikely to happen anytime soon. This is a project much bigger than any Batman or Superman movie not too mention risky. The budget for this would sure to be huge and if it does not work then WB would probably be reluctant to do just about any other comic movie in the near future. God imagine the fanboys arguing over this one with so many of their heroes in one movie battling for face time, it could get awful ugly.

Welling = Superman in the JLA movie.

Anonymous said...

They could do better than Welling. Give it to someone who actually has talent and wants the role.

Anonymous said...

"The budget for this would sure to be huge and if it does not work then WB would probably be reluctant to do just about any other comic movie in the near future."

That is very much true. I mean is WB really going to backburn all of their comic franchises including Batman after The Dark Knight just to make this movie? The film would have to be a smash or your right they would be scared to do any comic movie again for a long time. WB needs to get to work on a Green Latern movie and the flash movie. Either get Singer to make serious changes in Superman or get rid of him and go in a new direction. Now is not the time for a JL movie though.

Anonymous said...

^^

Maybe WB is so desperate for a smash comic book hit like Spiderman they are willing to go for broke right now with a JL movie. It is a risky as hell decision because of the expense and what you said about maybe wrecking any chance of other DC characters like the Flash and GL getting their own movies anytime in the near future. I say if they love the script that much and can get the perfect director then go for it but they had better be damn sure it will work.

Anonymous said...

yet another ominous sign for the Singerman franchise.

I wouldnt doubt that the ratings success that Smallville's Justice League episode had didnt influence this in at least some fashion.

This is going to be a difficuly project to pull off correctly. They're going to need a BIG TIME director for this sort of project, like a Wolfgang Peterson or Peter Jackson type, someone who's skilled at weaving multiple storylines between multiple leading characters, and who can do an action film justice.

Anonymous said...

I think WB liked about 100 Superman scripts before SR got made. This is a real longshot guys it just such a huge risky project for WB. Why would they do this now when they have yet to make movies with many great DC characters? I agree with the other poster if it fails then those other projects are not happening anytime soon. Singerman sucked that can go in the can for a while for all i care but GL and Flash those have great potential and should come before any JL movie.

Anonymous said...

the thing is, WB has seen the films made for Marvel's lesser characters (Daredevil, Ghost Rider, Elektra, Punisher, etc) and has seen them have modest success at best. They've also seen the big successes of the team-based Marvel films like X-men and to a lesser extent Fantastic Four.
They also havent had tremendous success with their own big 2 characters, so they're probably a bit gun shy to do films about their lesser knowns like Flash, GL, etc. I can see the logic in it making sense to do one big film and go for the home run with the JLA as opposed to hoping for the best with films of the individual characters

Anonymous said...

^^

Well i think it all comes down to how you do it. Nobody saw the success of Spiderman coming but they had a great script and a director in Raimi that really got the character and away they went. I agree with what someone else said in that the budget for this would sure to be huge and it if fails then WB is probably going to be gunshy about any future comic films expcept maybe Batman depending on how The Dark Knight turns out. I would rather see them wait on this. Get Singer to make a lot of changes to Superman or fire him and start fresh. Try to get going the Flash and GL movies before you go for broke with a JL film. Think of how big the film could be years down the line if WB is able to make several successful films in a row with many of the DC characters that will be in the JL movie. Then people would be so jazzed for the JL movie it would be insane.

Anonymous said...

A JL movie what an awful idea that is. Maybe WB should just make a Power Ranger movie while they are at it.

Anonymous said...

there are two powerrangers movies in existence and though neither of them were terribly good I'd be overjoyed with a more serious, epic, powerrangers film than another sequel overstuffed with cgi that's made to sell action figures.

Hey hollywood, newsflash. movies are an art-form.

Anonymous said...

I don't think any serious actor would be caught dead in a movie like this. It's likelihood of being really cheesy is extremely high. Yeah you could get Routh for this since all he has is Superman but Bale would probably laugh at this project. Who would play Hawkman, now there is a character easy to pull off and not make look silly. The guy has a mask shaped like a bird and Wings coming out of his ASS!!

Anonymous said...

I'm assuming a JLA movie would be Supes, Bats, Wonder Woman, GL, Flash, Manhunter, and maybe Aquaman similar to the cartoons. I doubt whether they'd get into characters like Green Arrow, Hawkman, The Atom or Black Canary.

Anonymous said...

"I'm assuming a JLA movie would be Supes, Bats, Wonder Woman, GL, Flash, Manhunter, and maybe Aquaman similar to the cartoons. I doubt whether they'd get into characters like Green Arrow, Hawkman, The Atom or Black Canary"

I agree...I think the JLA movie is going to be hard enough without having characters like Hawkman around. The problem with the JLS is that the hero's have incredible powers and where bright shiny and corny costumes. It's going to be hard to make people not laugh at this. It's not like the XMEN where the powers weren't that over the top and the people are more relatable. So they are goint to have their work cut out for them to keep it just north of Fantastic Four territory.

It can be done though, so I'm really looking forward to it if they go ahead and do it.

"See we don't need (or deserve)another Singershambles"

I never said that I needed to see a sequel, just that I would like it if they did do one. I liked the movie (obviously), but if I'm going to get Superman as part of a JLA movie then I am just fine with that.

Anonymous said...

Swright this movie has little chance to be anything but a cheesy mess, not too mention a casting diaster. You think Bale would touch something like this, no chance the likelihood of it sucking is way too high.

Anonymous said...

"He is not saying he does not want a Returns sequel he is...."

He can speak for himself jackass.

You'll find plenty of folks more confident in a JLA film than Singer coming back for a Returns sequel that's for sure.

Father Finian Egan

Anonymous said...

"You think Bale would touch something like this, no chance the likelihood of it sucking is way too high. "

It honestly depends...If the cheese factor is incredibly high then I doubt it would even get made. It needs to be a lot different then what we've seen on TV and the comics for it to even get made. I do not want a JLA movie in the same vain as Fantastic Four. It HAS to be taken seriously by the audience.

And even if it was a bit cheesy, I think Bale would do it for the right price..Let's remember that this is the guy that did SHAFT and REIGN OF FIRE. Try and rewatch those without cringing.

ApologistPuncher said...

"Let's remember that this is the guy that did...REIGN OF FIRE. Try and rewatch those without cringing."

That explains your film tastes right there, and why you "like" Singerman Repugnant.

You "cringe" watching Reign of Fire, but have MINIMAL problems with Singerman? You say ROF is "cheesy", but "Defend" Singerman Peeps?? YOU sir, are NO Gene Siskel.

"You "cringe" watching Reign of Fire, but have MINIMAL problems with Singerman? You say ROF is "cheesy", but "Defend" Singerman Peeps?? YOU sir, are NO Gene Siskel."

Sorry man, but Matthew Moconahey (or however the hell you spell his name) is Cheese personified in that film, and his American soldier is so blatantly over the top, that as a brother of a US Marine, it kind of ticked me off. And what I meant was that CB did a film about DRAGONS. I don't think he would have that much of a problem doing a JLA film as long as it's not FF level cheese.

And I like how you edited my quote so you can make your point.

Anonymous said...

Singer's ability to cast decent actors is minimal at best, look at both X-Men movies, aside from a certain few, the rest were, MEH.

Of all the decent actors that auditioned for the role, he went with SuperBlandonRouth, so Routh, at least to me, would be perfect in this movie.

He would be part of a larger cast that could hopefully make up for, or at least hide, his lack of acting talent, charisma, and blandness.

So, no to Singerman II and Blandon Routh, yes to Routh being pushed aside in whatever JLA movie they want to make.

ApologistPuncher said...

"And I like how you edited my quote so you can make your point."

Hey genius, that's what the "..." were for. Meaning there was more that was cut out. Not too bright, are you REtard?

And at least there were no "rubber fetish suits" in Reign of Fire...

I could see Warners making this film in an effort to kick start a bunch of other franchises. If they're trying to feel out the market for, say, Flash or GL solo films, this isn't a bad way to do it. Plus, this would provide a good segue into replacing Singerman with, y'know, an *actual* Superman? Maybe they'll use Welling, maybe they'll hire someone new, who knows? But the point is that this is the perfect way to get rid of Singerman. Myself, I have no doubt that Christian Bale might have some interest in the film if the money's right.

As for which heroes to use, I'd say go classic and use Batman, Superman, the Flash, Aquaman and Wonder Woman.

Anonymous said...

Routh was first brought in to audtion for the role by McG, and McG didnt even like him. That right there should've told you something.

AS for Singer's "casting abilities" I think his ability to cast superheroes is poor at best. Halle Berry as Storm? James Marsden as Cyclops? Even the ones that worked out in Ian "Queerer than a $2 bill" McKellan and Hugh Jackman were NOTHING like their comic counterparts. Atleast in their case though they were classically trained thespians and in the case of Jackman, Singer pretty much lucked in to that after having a dispute with Dougray Scott, the original actor hr chose for Wolverine (how bad would that've been?) Routh was a soap opera reject, and it showed in his balsa wood like performance. No wonder people are beggin for Welling to be Superman. Compared to Routh, Welling looks like Sir Laurence Olivier.

Anonymous said...

"No wonder people are beggin for Welling to be Superman. Compared to Routh, Welling looks like Sir Laurence Olivier."

The Smallville fanboys are whining about Routh and want Welling you got one problem Welling has no love for Superman and wants no part of playing him in a movie. The guy has it in his contract on SV that he does not have to wear the suit he is an asshole big time. The Gen public liked Routh very much he was the one thing most agreed was good about Returns.

Yeah I'm sure Warners will put the same amount of effort into the proposed big screen adaption as they did in that TVM! In fact the TVM had nearly as goofy as costumes as the goofy ass costume Routh wore in Returns! In fact it's good of you that you brought the TV JLA movie up because in a way it parallels many of the problems that Returns suffered from...poor casting, poor costume updates, unbelievably lame villian, it too was made by people with no understanding of the subject matter, unconvincing effects.

Strangely though, the nameless stars of the JL movie actually went on to viable onscreen acting careers to this day, unlike whatisname from Returns.

I have never heard of any of those people. You do realize that Chris Reeve himself once appeared at an autograph session just like the one that BR did. Elijah Wood did so as well. I am sure you know it is hard for actors who have played Superman to not be typecast so Brandon is going to have to deal with the same thing. No you have missed the point and backed yourself into a corner all at once. You said that some actors do that to supplemant their incomes like Elijah Wood and Chris Reeve also at one time. Then you said that BR does it because that is his income. If he has only done one major session how the hell does what you are saying ring true? He clearly falls into the supplemantal income category that you talked about. Chris Reeve found work after Superman but never any major success. Name me one hit he was in after Superman? Hell even the last 2 Superman movies were flops. Chris was the better actor don't get me wrong but BR is way too young to bury his career at this point.

You see the big difference though is that Christopher Reeve played Superman four times on the big screen and later guested on Smallville.

Brandon Wouth was forgotten not even a year after he unsuccessfully attempted to imitate Christopher Reeve as Superman.

The problem with giving Wouth lines from the earlier films was yet ANOTHER dumbass idea from Singer. It only proved to all that Reeve pulled off those lines sooo much better.

Reeve will for sure for his role as Superman and his amazing fight that he endured in life. However he was not a star in anything else as an actor he just wasn't. You can't ignore facts, everything else he did was not a success it is what it is. When Reeve himself expressed great dissapointment about his career outside of Superman you look a little nuts trying to argue it was a success.

Routh will be playing Superman again in the sequel and 2 times Reeve played Superman the films sucked and bombed at the BO. Especially Superman 4, widely seen as maybe the worst comic movie of all time.

Now he's posted Routh's(who?) SPACEY(what?)acceptance speech as further proof of the sequel.

Funnily enough Routh(who?)goes so far as to reassure viewers that the next one "will be better, er bigger"

Interestingly though he does hint at Canada as a possible shooting location. Either he's getting mixed up with Smallville, or Warners have realised that Sydney does not look like the U.S.A. Then again, Routh doesn't look like Superman and Bosworth doesn't look human, so what's the fuckin point?

Hold up, if your name is Terminal from the Homepage then why are you posting here? Last I checked you were a Superman Returns apologist at the Homepage, and a Smallville basher.

S.S.S. said...

Someone needs to read up a bit on Christopher Reeeve. In addition to being a graduate of Juliard where he was a classically-trained theater actor, Reeve did many things on the stage and screen. Superman may be the role he is best known for, but a lot of that had more to do with his own career choices than it did type-casting.
After Superman, Reeve turned down the lead role in American Gigolo (1980) which went to Richard Gere. Turned down the role of Fletcher Christian in The Bounty (1984) which went to Mel Gibson. Turned down the lead role in Body Heat (1981) which went to John Hurt. He turned down the role of Mason Verger in Hannibal (2001) which went to Gary Oldman. In 1976, turned down the role of Mark Harris in "The Man from Atlantis" (1977) which went to Patrick Duffy. He turned down the role of Jack T. Colton in Romancing the Stone (1984) which went to Michael Douglas. He also turned down the lead role in The Running Man (1987) which went to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Reeve basically eschewed superstardom and chose to work on more "artsy" faire which was more in line with his background. Had he taken all of those big roles offered to him, it's not hard to assume he could've enjoyed the same career success as a Harrison Ford, who jumped around from legensary film franchises without being typecast.

The point is that he didn't take those roles. That is like saying if Patrick Ewing played with Micael Jordan he would have won 10 titles. Guess what it never happened. You can't trash Routh one year after SR came out and use Reeve as a measuring stick for great success outside of Superman in films. He did not have any. What he could have done is meaningless, he didn't do it. Nobody has ever had great success outside of Superman who has played him.

Typical though that you'd draw such a long bow. Cain was and remains a TV star. He didn't portray Superman in a massively hyped mega million dollar movie and have his face plastered on every Cornflakes box around the world only to vanish into obscurity less than a year later like Wouth

Whew! That's all I need to know. I think we're both going to extremes over this. Let's come back in ten years time and see how Wouth's kicked on. To be perfectly honest, whilst I consider him miscast to a certain extent I shouldn't hold Wouth too responsible for the debacle that is Returns. He's a young, jobbing actor who won an amazing opportunity who worked for a lot less than he deserved for an arduous shoot because he was promised the knock on effects of the success the film would have. Sadly for him, as yet, that success hasn't materialised.

Sorry I should have addressed this first but I have only just composed myself after swright's outburst.

No, the point is that obviously Reeve wasnt typecast if directors were offering him those roles which was were all over the spectrum. Whether or not he accepted them is irrelevant to the point I was making, which was people were beating the guy's door down after Superman The Movie, and for the most part he had no interest. Reeve was a "victim," if you want to call it that, of his own career choices not some external stigma related to playing Superman. Your Patrick Ewing analogy is flawed b/c Ewing never had the opportunity to play with Jordan and then turned it down, which is what Reeve's scenario is more analogous to.

Were you trying to be ironic, or was it just an accident? That's some funny shit right there.

Also, did you mean Jake Lloyd? If so, is there a reason you compared Routh to a couple of CHILD actors? Routh can only dream of being as lucky as Haley Joel Osment, who seems to be doing quite well for himself these days. See his IMDb page. The Jake Lloyd comparison sort of makes sense, though I think you're being awfully hard on Lloyd. The kid wasn't that bad.

Yes Reeve had oppurtunities but Routh is 27 not 37, 27. It has been a year since Returns came out and he has been a part of two projects since. You don't know what is in front of Brandon, looks like he will be playing Superman at least once more and then we will see where he goes from there. As i said is he as good as Reeve, NO WAY, Reeve was a great actor no doubt about it. However it is not fair to bury Brandon's career at his young age and try at the same time to make Chris's career in films to be something that it was not, simply because people offered him roles that he did not want and the ones he took were bad choices that failed. In 2 or 3 years if Brandon is not being offered good roles then kill him but not yet.

Routh is, was, and always will be a soap opera reject, but you have to love those that think the public see's him as the face of superman, as so many like to say a SHH.

Nine out of ten people if they were asked on the street, who is this a picture of, wouldn't have a clue that is is SuperBlandmanRouth. The guy is a nobody with a career going nowhere.

Seems almost everyone else considered for the role of Supes seems to be thriving, while poor Routh, is lost in the shuffle.

Why would Warner's want to again attempt a Superman movie with a non-entity such as Blandon Routh. The public, and hopefully Warner's is way past this guy.

He was a washed up soap actor and unknown model. He was wooden, dull, and inconwequential in what was supposed to be the biggest movie of '06, but was a bust.

For the sake of the Superman project, please, drop Routh, and lest us move forward.

Routh was not the reason the film did not make a billion dollars at the BO. Read the reviews listen to the people who saw the film who are not insane fanboys. People liked him. Returns was a hit but not a smash mainly thanks to Singer not making it more of a adventure movie stylishly done with action. Those people saw Pirates instead.

Anonymous said...

BLANDon Routh was the title character in the movie. And cotrary to SHH myth, BLANDon did not get universally praised for th role. He was not the great thing about a dull movie. Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada" was a great thing about a so-so movie.

The only truly great performances for last year were Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, and a few others.

BLANDon Routh was just that, bland. The onus of the failure of this film should not be bourn by KB, and KB only. She may have been miscast, but so was Routh.

Routh was the title character, and as so, he failed to deliver. And because of that, he has disappeared from view, thankfully.

Warner's is quite aware of this. They may or may not know what went wrong, but the finger should not be pointed at Singer, and KB alone. Routh was a failure in that no one cared, and the BO suffered. He has disappeared, and may not come back again, if WB is smart.

He is not the face of Supes for the 21st century, he is a has been who never was. Good riddance, don't let the door smack you on the way out.

Bye, Bye.

"However it is not fair to bury Brandon's career at his young age.."

He's doing a perfectly good job of burying his career himself. He doesn't need assistance.

You're not Routh are you? Or his boyfriend perhaps?

You keep missing the basic point that unlike Wouth, Superman allowed Reeve the financial security to be his own man. It's disingenous to suggest that it's only about box office success. Look at Reeve's career. You overlook his humanitarian achievements, his "proper" acting like on Broadway, his aviation feats, all well before the accident.

What's Routh up to? Who knows other than a couple of indie films and selling his own autograph. He's not even seen in the dinner theater circuit!

The role made others stars, known, and sought after. Routh, it made disappear, though not fast enough for me.

Nobody knows much of anything about this JL movie because it is not likely to happen. WB had about a million Superman scripts turned in before they finally went with Returns so nobody other than the people at the very top of WB are going to know much about the status of that project. What is it that you want Brandon to say about the sequel? There is nothing more to talk about until the script gets done and WB has a look at it. I don't remember people bugging the shit out of Bale about The Dark Knight night and day. Hell Bale even said when they were about to start that he had yet to even read a script.

ReTool, if you're trying to look like an imbecile, you've succeeded. Because only a complete moron would compare Brandon-hold-my-head-I'm-gunna-Ralph to Samuel L. Jackson and Sean Connery.

What an idiot.

so let me get this straight, out of Sean Connery's near infinite and accomplished career catalog, you've picked out two films he did in one year as an old man, both of which we're big feature films and not low budget pseudo-indie crap, and that's supposed to prove what exactly about Brandon Routh's career?

BTW they wouldnt let Routh get Sean Connery coffee for christ's sake. the fact that you're trying to compare them in anyway as it pertains to their acting careers, just proves that your mother was sniffing too much paint thinner when she was pregnant with you. Then again I guess a crack whore has to do what a crack has to do.

Man, Transformers only cost like 150 million to produce and it looks like its worth at least 200 million in SFX while SR cost like 200 without the added cost of failed projects and looks no better than an episode of Smallville on The CW.

If Time Warner wants an action packed hero epic the next time around on a tight budget they need to get someone other than Singer cause the guy as no idea how to make the most out of every dollar.

Anonymous said...

"That's because it's future was assured much earlier surely."

No it wasn't The Dark Knight did not get the green light for a very long time. It was all just talk coming mainly from Nolan about how they were prgiressing, the same kind of talk you are hearing from Singer right now. There is nothing new to talk about until at the very least they finish the script. WB is not going to decide anything until then, that is just common sense.

"Well thank you Mr Warner Brothers. Seems to me there's already a higher level of excitement about a JL movie. They're even asking the always clueless Brandon Routh about it, in case you hadn't noticed jackass."

If you know anything about the history of WB, DC and these films you would know unlike Marvel it takes them forever to get these projects out. This would be a massive undertaking from every angle.

We can only hope that with the failure of Singerman and the dramatic ratings losses of Smellville, that the age of male models as bad Superman actors is now over.

Neither Welling or Routh can act, though Welling has the charm and charisma that Routh so badly acts.

Can we reboot with someone, anyone with training, stage experience, and acting talent to bring Superman back to life?

Honestly Warner's, you did it with Batman, can you do it for Supes? Is that too much to ask? Seiously, is it?

E) If you people with your limited inteligence can see Marvel is kicking DC's ass the execs know it too and make more money then you.

The point is morons, DC will not just walk away from a frachise that has spawned 4 successful live action TV series, numerous animation, and 5 movies.....so in 2009.............

Look at the comic movies that have struck out here recently. Ghost Rider sucked and only made 115 mil. FF2 had great Buzz with the Surfer and after a good opening weekend it is tanking badly not likely to make 150 mil. You have Batman Begins that's sequel is currently filming that made less than returns did at the BO. Yes SR cost more to make but given all that do you honestly think that WB sees SR as this utter failure?

ApologistPuncher said...

Of course they see it as a failure, you Apologist shit-stain. You CAN'T throw-out something as IMPORTANT as HOW MUCH THE MOVIE COST TO MAKE to "prove" a "point". Did Spiderman 3 NOT trash Singerman at the BO? Yes, and it was the WORST of the 3.

And be prepared, those of you with brains, when Transformers goes up against Harry Potter and STILL trounces Singerman Peeps at the BO. There goes that old Apologist excuse of "wah, it went up against Pirates, wah"...

D. REAL actors STAR in 2 movies a year, you fucking wretch. They DON'T play "bit parts" in little straight-to-DVD shit like your man Blandon.

And Singerman Peeps "spawned" SHIT, like your mother did when she had YOU. SUPERMAN is responsible for MORE than the limited-scope things you quoted, and WB will wait for a REAL Superman film to come along.

According to box office mojo Spiderman 3 cost $258 million to produce and has made as of Jun. 28, 2007: $333,091,273 in Domestic totals alone added with its worldwide take it’s at $879,633,275 dollars.

Pirates on the other hand lcost 300 million to produce and as of today is at $292,168,000 domestic and $877,168,000 with worldwide totals.

Now compare these numbers to SR which cost $270 million to produce and grossed $200,081,192 domestic at the one of the slowest rates in cinema history and had a combined worldwide total of only $391,081,192.

Time Warner was stupid to allow Singer to make a Queer of Steel film in the 200 million dollar plus production range thinking that kids today would give a darn about The Donner of Yesterday while hopping that it would make Spiderman like numbers at the box office to justify its budget.

Returns cost 204 mil to make. Not one cent of the failed attempts when into the actual making of returns my man. It all goes on the same tab as a matter of paperwork but you honestly think that WB holds SR responsible for Tim Burton bailing on them among others. SR is not the first project to have failed attempts that came before it. WB would be crazy to ditch Returns for this JL movie. Why you ask? The main complaint about SR is lack of action. So make the sequel with a supervillain and lots of action. Pirates 2 sucked shit as a film but it had the action so the people flocked to it. A JL movie will cost WB far more than a returns sequel and if it fails, bye bye Green Lantern and Flash and Wonder Woman franchises from getting off the ground anytime soon. Why would WB have faith in them when a JL movie featuring them failed? The risk/reward is far greater for this JL movie than with a Returns sequel.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above. A JL movie would be horrible with a nobody cast and cheesy FX. If they go ahead they might as well change this to I Hate JL movie. I said it once I will say it again..........

Singerman is the final result of that decade long project. Come back after you've taken Accounting 101.

“It all goes on the same tab as a matter of paperwork but you honestly think that WB holds SR responsible for Tim Burton bailing on them among others.”
^^^
Why don’t you actually read up on the Singerman production budget situation before putting out blank generalizations.

According to Entertainment Weekly (Which is owned by Time Warner):

Ultimately, extra effects and the addition of a bank-robbery sequence — which gained the movie a trailer-friendly bulletproof-eyeball moment — pushed the budget over $200 million. According to the studio, Superman Returns' price tag is $204 million. Without the Australian tax credits: about $223 million.

Add in the bills for Ratner and McG, WHICH WILL COUNT AGAINST SINGER'S FILM,

and the total comes to an estimated $263 million, plus potentially another $100 million in worldwide marketing costs.

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,1204671_5,00.html

It’s the same in different branches of pre development as well not just movies.

Take for example what came to be the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo spent millions of dollars on other designs and concepts including next gen systems on par with Xbox 360 and PS II graphics wise but in the end opted to go with what ended up to be the Wii; a non next gen graphics focused system with an innovative control interface.

Now Nintendo didn’t just write off the other cost of development as a separate eternity because they weren’t the actual part of the Wii system as we know it to be.
It’s all on the same accounting bank sheet because it’s the preface of the final result of the project even if the concepts they worked on earlier didn’t pan out in the end in the finalized project.

It seems like you apologist are so desperate to say that SR wasn’t that bad of a flop that you’re willing to forgo all basic economical and business logic to do so.

You all truly live in your own Bizarro World.

Gee, why's that, do you think? Returns failed to engage it's demographic, let alone the general filmgoer. Had it been a good ol rollicking adventure, as it should have been with, relationships that people could care about, the Spidey might not have retained his monopoly. They made Superman cool for the seventies. Returns failed even to capitalise on the relative success of Smallville.

The answer is the reason why Singer shouldn't be allowed near another Superman project.

Anonymous said...

Or how bout over exposure. We have Smallville, Lois and Clark reruns, and Justice League. No matter how great the story was people were overfed on Superman. Returns was at least an original respresentation. That is why we should all back Singer.......

Finally. And no, I wouldn't say Returns is a better movie than Spidey at all.

If people are "overfed" on Superman how come Smallville keeps getting recommissioned? Why are Warners releasing two animated Superman related features to DVD this year along with all the incredible amount of older Supes titles?

So you're saying that despite Returns being supposedly the jewel in the crown of 2006's "Year Of Superman" it simply failed to measure up due to the public being exposed to other, better versions of Superman. That is a very credible reason for it's failure actually.

There is a lot more to it than that. Batman Begins seems to be seen as the better film and it made less than Returns. The Dark Knight is a long shot to make that kind of cash as well. It is not as simple as Singer made a bad film. The public was probbaly not going to embrace Superman like Spiderman nomatter what was put out. A lot of people see Superman as a fucking boyscout, who is too powerful. They want darker heroes who are more vulnerable.
