Kevin Smith Thinks Singerman is Boring... and a Rapist

Well you can add another name to the list of people in the comic/film industry who have come out to voice their issues with Singerman. The latest one being Hollywood director and comic writer Kevin Smith, who by his own admission is a huge fan of the Man of Steel. As you may recall, Smith was actually brought on the Superman Lives film project a few years ago before Jon "Let me show you what boys have" Peters ultimately scared him off the project with talk of gay robots and polar bears.

Smith appeared at last weekend's New York Comic Con and conducted a Q&A session for fans. Some of the fan questions had to do with his impression of the group of comicbook films that have been released recently. According to numerous reports, Smith responded with the following regarding Singerman:
"It was kind of....boring," he said, before launching into a diatribe on the lameness of Lex Luthor and the silliness of pitting a superhuman alien against a real-estate scam artist. "I'm gonna get a mortgage at .4 percent!" Smith joked. He said that X3 was better than Superman Returns, and also went off on another tangent, about supposed logic problems with the film.
According to Smith, the logic problems occur if you accept Bryan Singer's premise -- that Superman Returns picks up where the second film leaves off, with Superman having sex with Lois, then giving her an amnesia kiss and taking off to go find his relatives and whatnot. When Lois finds out her kid in Superman Returns can throw a piano, and is therefore Superman's kid, why is she not very surprised? She should have no memory of having sex with Superman, so
when she visits him in the hospital, shouldn't her first question to him be -- Smith's words -- "When did you rape me?"
If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say that Singerman was boring or pointed how stupid the Luthor land scheme was, I might have enough money to make my own $200 million disaster. Smith also echoes our earlier point about Singer's giant cop-out of using the first two film's continuity but only where he sees fit. If you're going to pick up where another film left off, you've got to do it all the way. You can't just pick and choose where you want because the audience has no idea what's in continuity and what isn't. Despite the lameness of a lot of Richard Lester's Superman II, that's what people know since that's what was released to the public, the vast majority of the audience will never see the Donner cut (although as one of our astute readers pointed out, in Donner's cut Supes turns back time anyway so the sex never happened so Singer is still screwed.) Sticking with that, you've got Lois who has a kid with superpowers who never remembers sleeping with an infinitely powerful being (well, some of the time at least) who she knows could use his powers to do pretty much anything he wants to someone. No, that's not creepy at all... Good job Singer!

Kevin Smith is a dummy and he doesn't know nothing becuase he makes lame movies and they aren't funny so he shouldn't talk about Singerman Peeps until he makes a movie that has a beautiful rape story and piano throwing kids who murder when they are 5 years old so until he does he can't talk.

That about cover the "Apologist" retort? Good.

Kevin Smith ALSO said there "wasn't enough GAY in the movie". Even HE saw through BS' bullshit.

SR wouldn't really work anyway even if Singer followed Donner's cut. Superman reversed time at the end of Donner's cut thus undoing everything. Therefore, yes Lois wouldn't remember everything, but that would also mean that they didn't shake things up in bed either. Either way you look at it, Singer's screwed on this point.

In fact, I'm watching parts of Donner's cut right now and I have to say that Reeve owns this part. I don't mean anything personal to Routh, but man, he doesn't hold a candle to Reeve in the role. Reeve just made the role look good!

To be fair though, I'm not sure if Kevin Smith can talk until he's put out films other than the likes of Clerks. Other than probably being correct in his observations (to a point), I don't see why everyone cares what he thinks.

Again, once he has put out some quality films, then I might care, but in the meantime...

Anonymous said...

people care what Smith thinks not so much for his films (although he does have a bit of a cult following there), it's because of his ties to the comic world. The guy did wonders as a writer on Daredevil and Green Arrow.

No you dumbass, click on the link SSS posted. JON PETERS wanted to have Brainiac and Polar Bears. The black suit was from the JJ Abrams draft of the script. Get your facts straight.

Kevin Smith is good at what he does, making stoner movies.

But even a guy who smoked bongloads after bongloads can realize Singerman was a piece of shit.

Anonymous said...

First it's Richard Lester not Tim Lester SSS..Might want to fix that. Second, it hasn't been a secret that Smith didn't like the film.

I love Smith's movie's. They are hilarious, but if there is one thing that Smith shouldn't be making fun of in SR it's the gayness issue. Because Smith is the king of homoerotic subtext in his films.

Anonymous said...

Smith is right though. This movie was so fucking boring. That's unacceptable for a superman film. I'd gladly take another superkid over hours of superman's emo crying.

ApologistPuncher said...

Does a little thing called "irony" mean anything to you? That someone who has had gay characters and themes in his movies "calling out" BS on HIS is the definition of said "irony"?

where did Smith say anything about Singerman and it being gay?

Look it up, you'll find it pretty easily.

The problem with listening to Kevin Smith is he seemingly is always talking shit about someone or something. He seems to get off on the fact that he is not a part of the corporate machine that is Hollywood and just makes small independant films. It is very easy for him to take shots at people like Singer and other big budget films because he knows full well he has burned too many bridges to ever get a shot at making one himself. He really has nothing to lose in that aspect. Plus he is still pissed about the way he was dismissed years ago by Burton in the infamous Superman Reborn project with Nik Cage. So i think any version of Superman he was going to pick apart because it is not his version.

First off it was Superman Lives, and Smith wasnt dismissed by Tim Burton get your facts straight before you strain yourself in a desperate attempt to discredit the man because he sees the movie for what it is. You see, Kevin Smith not only has written many successful comics, but he's also a life-long fan of the character, so what he does and doesnt direct in Hollywood is irrelevant to his opinion on Superman Returns.
It's funny at the NYCon he listed X2 as one of his favorite comic films, so that sort of shoots your "grudge against Singer" theory to shit.

Get my facts straight huh. First off the working title for that film changed like a million times Superman Reborn was one of many. Secondly i never said Smith had a grudge against Singer try reading what i wrote. I said he has a history of talking shit about people in Hollywood which is 100% accurate. Reeve was always great but the Donner Cut itself was pretty mediocre, actually made me appreciate the Superman 2 i have loved for years even more. I don't blame Donner for that because he did not get to finish.

I agree. I think, if I recall correctly, that Donner even states in the beginning of the cut that it's not exactly what he would have done. He still had to work with shots that Lester took. I kind of look at Donner's Cut as a "best effort" or a "what if", but one couldn't call it canon.

However, in particular, I was watching a scene of Reeve talking to Jor-El in the fortress of solitude and, in my opinion, Reeve just brought a noble feel to the character.

Us returns fans are smart and we love you Singer. Keep making vague sequels, you genius. We'll support you forever and ever.

Anonymous said...

Such is the fanboy way after superboy began!

Who saw this superboy thing coming anyway?

To say Returns polarized fans is an understatemt. Before singer dropped this heap of shit on us, we at least agreed that like begins, superman's source material should be acknowledged more than it's ever been before in the movies.

Then of course the WB spin squad joined all the forums and tried to spin every complaint they could to quiet fan dissent. That shit is just un-supermanly in every way, but then again so is most of the movie, so... what the hell right?

Those who care about this franchise not turning into a nipples and ass fest WB's shown in the past it has no problem turning comic characters into, made this blog. And thank god because those defending superman's comic history against this disrespectful cgi filled tragedy of a film have absolutely no fucking clue who superman really was in either donner's film or in the comics.

I expect history to repeat itself as fans of returns will settle for singer and say "it had an epic feeling" "I was moved" "it's better than x3" and happily roll around in the shit they're given completely blind to the all the potential that's now flushed down the toilet.

Such is the way of the fanboy!

Actually it cost them 110 million to make and it's only made about 95 million..It will probably finish up right around that number. It's falling faster than DareDevil did and DareDevil made 110 million. Couple that with the fact that it's not a huuge hit overseas and it won't be that much more profitable than SR. It will probably make a little bit more because their marketing budget wasn't so high, but it's not going to be a huuge earner for the studio.

The overseas numbers are a big issue in and of itself for the Superhero genre. Check the numbers since 2000 no comic book flick other than Spiderman has managed pull in even 250 mil overseas. Spiderman has made over 400 mil both times but the next highest total is X3 with just 224. BB was terrible overseas making only 166 mil, SR not that much better only 191 mil. These movies seem to have a lot of pressure on them to really rake it in domestically since the overseas numbers do not appear to be there.

Well considering everybody who hated the movie and said it wouldn't hit 200 million kept pointing the the percentage decrease of SR when it was out, I would say it matters...The argument can't work for one and not the other.....It won't get anywhere near 140 million dollars, and will probably stop between 110 and 120...

However everybody keeps pointing to SR's inability to not double it's budget as a reason it is losing money..Well if you are watching the numbers for GR then it has to make 220 million at least to break even..And it's only at 156 million WW...It's 64 million dollars short..I don't know if it can make that up.

Anonymous said...

"And your "prediction" of $110 million is not only laughable, it's unrealistic. If you had said $140-$150 million, THEN I might have agreed."

Given GR rate of decline how in the hell do you see it pulling in 150 mil domestic? 110 mil is dead on maybe a little more but not much. The film got shit reviews and clearly it's word of mouth is not much better.

It is never going to sniff the area of 150 mil no chance. Check the data on BOM. At this current rate it should make only about 2 mil this week, Mon-Thur. Probably about 6 mil this weekend putting it's total at around 103 mil. The following week it should Make maybe 1 mil during the week and 3 mil during the weekend putting it at around 107 mil total. It's got no chance of making 10 million dollars this weekend...Not with 300 coming out. That movie is going to eat into it's business.

It won't reach 140 million AP...It's going to start losing theatres, and it's not getting repeat business. However if it does get to 140 million I'll come on and give you props for the prediction. Like I've said in my previous post..At most it's going to make 120 million..

My estimates were based on roughly 50% drops. I said even if it only drops 40% from now till the end of it's run 140 mil is never going to happen. On average a film only makes an additional 2 mil in it's dollar theatre run, depending on what kind of theatre bump it gets. The film would have to be in the 138 mil range by the time it goes into dollar theatres to make it to 140 mil. Based on these drops that is not going to happen.

Oh yes and BTW 9-10 mil this weekend when it only made 11.5 mil last weekend. How in the hell did you come up with that figure might i ask? GR will make about 6 mil this weekend bet on that.

God you are retarded, here is my quote.

"Even if the film only dropped at a consistant rate of say 40% from now on it has no shot at getting to 140 mil. GR will finish up at about 110-112 mil book it."

You went as high as 150 and i went as high as 112. I am going to win this by a mile. Okay we clear now i kicked your ass in this prediction so admit to defeat and move on FANBOY!!
