S.S.S. Live from the Superman Celebration!

Despite rumors to the contrary we havent left the planet unannounced to find our previously destroyed home world. We've been away doing the summertime vacation and work type stuff for the past few weeks, and with nothing that's "on the record" really coming out of the studio other than the proposed Teen Titans film,, news has been a bit slow. Although the rumors still seem to be flying fast and furious.

Since I just happened to be in Illinois this week for work, I had a chance to attend the Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL this weekend for the first time ever. It was basically like a huge comic convention that was just dedicated to Superman, but pretty cool nonetheless. If you're a Superman fan I'd recommend getting there at least once in your life. They had Superman themed everything there: costume pageants, car shows, auctions, art shows, dog shows, etc. They also had some celebrity guests there from the various incarnations of Superman in TV, comics, and movies. I actually got to meet the original Lois Lane, Noel Neill and Supergirl, Helen Slater, which was cool. Erica Durance from Smallville was supposed to be there, but was apparently very sick and unable to attend.

The one thing that stood out to me during the time I was there was the lack oi anything really having to do with Singerman there. I thought this odd considering Singerman had come out less than a year ago, and this was the first Superman Celebration since it's release. I think I saw 2 kids out of a few hundred that were there in anything even resembling the Singerman costumes they were selling for kids last Halloween. Most everyone was sporting the traditional look. Also, in all of the auctions there was little, if any, Singerman merchandise. I came across one of the vendors who was selling an authentic Singerman DVD for $6.99 and asked him why it was so cheap? His response was, "I have so many of them, I just want to get rid of the damn things." I was half-tempted to direct him to this blog posting so he could make the best of his bad situation. There were also no guests there from Singerman. Sure Noel Neill was there, but she was there as "TV's First Lois Lane" not "Dying, old bag that signed her fortune over to a pathetic version of Lex Luthor."

Being the inquisitive gent and social butterfly that I am, I figured I'd do some informal questioning of some of the most hard core of the hard core Superman fanbase about some of the hot button topics (and yes, these people were pretty hardcore. If you fly 2500 miles to go to this convention in your own handmade Supes costume, THAT's hardcore!) I did this without revealing who I was, so as not to taint the answers and to protect my secret identity. I talked to a few dozen pretty interesting people during my time there; at the hotel bar, at the merchant tables, at the costume shows and I found one common thread regarding Singerman. When asked what they thought of the film, I got a luke warm response at best. Answers ranged from "It was OK" to "I liked the guy in the suit but the movie was silly" to "Bryan Singer is clueless" (NOT making that one up) to "They crapped all over the character" (that one came from a mother of 3). Granted this wasn't a statistically accurate poll or anything, and I'm not trying to use it as definitive evidence that the film sucked. I just liked hearing the opinions of people who eat, drink, and breath Superman and would go out of their way to support the character in any medium. The highlight of my day had to come when I was talking a woman in her late 40's/early 50's in one of the art galleries and when I asked her if she followed tha character developments on the internet, she listed this blog as one of the places she checks occassionally for news. It's the little things like that, that brighten up your day.

You know i really wonder what kind of Superman movie the geek fanboy would love? One of the least successful Batman movies of the franchise, Batman Begins is adored by the fanboys yet bigger hits like Batman Forever and even Burton's Batman are trashed impossibly by the fanboys for Batman. Bottom line while SR is a flawed film fanboys are almost impossible to please and rarely in sinc with what the public thinks.

Anonymous said...

thing with batman begins is it had the taint of the previous batman films and begins made more money than batman forever, the movie was a massive word of mouth hit. huge. dvd's went crazy. i think you need to research more. the movie had alot of legs, everyone knows this, chud wrote an article on it compared to superman returns. that means people liked it. The Dark Knight is going to be a massive movie which is going to contradict your last line. The hype for the movie is huge because people loved the first one.

Why would you predict that the Dark Knight is going to be a massive hit at this point? That films biggest obstacle is Heath Ledger, not many seem to feel he right for the role, he may be in the same boat as Kate Bosworth this time next year. Secondly you have to factor in the inflation. Batman Forever sold far more tickets than Batman Begins did. Batman Forever inflated made 271 mil compared to BB 205 mil. It is like saying SR was better received than STM. Inflated STM made about 380 mil. Tickets sold is different than the amount of money it made because of inflation.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it really means anything that the hardcore fanboys at best thought it was OK. THese are the hardcore fans, whom we know have many problems with this movie.

It's certainly not surprising..

Anonymous said...

"the movie was a massive word of mouth hit. huge. dvd's went crazy."

Massive word of mouth hit. Well lets think about that for a sec. BB opened 4 mil less than SR opening weekend up against inferior competition made 5 mil more than SR domestic and 20 mil less Worldwide. So by that logic Returns got great word of mouth as well. I think you need to do some research of your own.

Anonymous said...

Interesting report. You need only see the Superman merchandise being released since the release of Returns as reported by Superman Homepage to see that the Singer version is forgotten.

It speaks volumes that when it comes to what sells, it aint Singerman. And that's the language that Warners understand.

Anonymous said...

It's certainly starting to add up now.

The fact remains that a mere year since Singer's film hit the screens Warners know that the CW want yet another season of Smallville(now with Supergirl!)and nobody besides Younis and a couple of his brainwashed sheep wants a sequel to Returns.

The news of Supergirl appearing in next years Smallville over at AICN sets of yet another barrage of hatred towards Singer on the forums!

Anonymous said...

WOW fanboys are not happy with a movie featuring their favorite character SSS. Shit that never happens now does it?

Anonymous said...

I liked it so much I'll put it here too.....

People that defend the mediocrity that is Superman Returns are living proof that nobody goes broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.

Sorry, the American public and that Aussie Steve Younis. Apart from him, the rest of the world saw Returns for what is was....mediocrity

Anonymous said...

"Sorry, the American public and that Aussie Steve Younis. Apart from him, the rest of the world saw Returns for what is was....mediocrity"

LOL ah yes fanboys who have no sense of reality. So by your logic SR was seen as the better film than Batman Begins, since it made 20 mil more than BB Worldwide. You just said it the world saw SR as mediocre so that means BB must have really sucked right buddy.

Anonymous said...

"So by your logic..."

No dumbass, who mentioned box office business?

You'll find a lot of people actually saw Returns and MANY were disapointed by it. Not so many people saw Begins to be sure, but obviously a greater percentage of those who did enjoyed it.

I know it's a more difficult concept to grasp, being market research, feedback and statistics and all that but again you do rather prove my point that nobody actually does go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. Any Younis will go to great lenghths to assure you that the sequel will have "more action" in it. Why do you think they've come to that conclusion??

LOL ah yes, your dumb blind arrogance betrays you.

Do you enjoy baseing everything you say on your own opinion. So according to you BB had better word of mouth than SR, yet no figure that you can give me will back that up. Who the hell is this Younis guy your boyfriend or what? You seem to be fixated on him.

Anonymous said...

No, no there's just no evidence of an anti Singer movement anywhere is there??

"Who the hell is this Younis guy your boyfriend or what?"

That's actually the funniest thing I've heard all day...well it was until I heard that Superman Returns has cleaned up at the "SPACEY AWARDS"!!

Not in any "Peoples Choice" categories though funnily enough.

The forum at the Spacey Award website has a grand total of about two dozen posts all seemingly confused as to how they judge the Spaceys!

Superman has 60 years of History. If I asked SSS how many Tom Welling look alikes or Michael Rosenbaum people there probably werent any. Speaking of which at a convention everything sells for like $5.oo. Hell i can make 50 zillion copies of a movie that look straight from the manufacturer. Nice Try SSS your bombshell news and other rumors flying about will not prevent from Singer

ReTart, for the 5,000,000th time, where on this site has it said there weasnt a sequel happening? Yet again, your reading comprehension fails you. I'd hate to see what you got on that part of your SAT exam.
There are a couple posts about rumors from OTHER WEBSITES that are specualting on the future of the franchise. No one here is saying there will be no sequel, though most of us are hoping it doesnt happen with Singer.
Secondly, SSS stated that the cheap DVD was an official copy not some knockoff, pirated version of it. They're not allowed to sell pirated merchandise at conventions you dolt. The only person you continue to "own" is yourself by your repeated displays of stupidity and ignorance.

LOL "tons of sites" are talking about Singerman II? There hasnt been a newsworthy bite about this potential film in weeks. Outside of the ballsuckers on BlueTights who is talking about this movie other than to tlak about how much of a terd it was?

S.S.S. said...

actually Restart, there was a ton of Smallville related stuff there. And I did see a couple Smallville Clark's walking around, one guy had the scarred \8/ symbol on his chest just like the show, the others had the red jacket, blue t-shirt getup going. They actually had Smallville themed tents, and a "Smallville Pavilion" at the celebration. Erica Durance was supposed to make an apearance but was too sick to make it. I was told that in past years they had Michael Rosenbaum and Jon Schneider show up there from the show.
And Voice is ocrrect, those DVD's were brand new, and factory sealed. They weren't Chinese knockoffs or anything. Had they been I wouldnt have been wondering why they were being sold at clearance.
The point of this post wasnt to be "earth-shattering news" as you so lamely intimated, it was basically just informal polling of people who live and die with the Superman character and who go out of their way to support ANYTHING Superman, and even they were disappointed with the film.

'Supergirl' Being Resurrected, But On Small Screen

"So guess who's coming to Smallville? No, it won't be Brandon Routh aimlessly searching for the set of the next Bryan Singer-helmed Superman flick ("Hey Brandon, I heard it was over there -- just stop when the sign says 2012"). Nope, instead the CW network has announced that Supergirl will join the cast of Smallville as it heads into its seventh season, and will make her first appearance (as Kara, Clark's cousin) in the premiere episode..."

Restart, I dont know what types of conventions you go to, but most of the big comic cons like the Superman Celebration are at least in part sponsored by the big comic and/or movie companies. People arent exactly going to be selling illeqal copies of their merchandise right under their noses when they're getting busted left and right doing it out of their own homes. I could see you getting them at a flea market or something but not one of the big time cons.
And for someone who's been on here bashing Spider-man 3 I find it curious that you bought a "pirated" copy of it on DVD at a convention.
As for me being AP, you're wrong yet again. Guy has his own IP address and everything. I'm anonymous as is, I wouldnt need to create another anonymous personality (on my own blog no less) to tell you that you're a clueless douchebag

What a fucking idiot you are not too mention a bigot. I never said anything about Returns in comparison to Smallville both are mediocre. Supergirl is the best idea they have got. That is what you want next year, Supergirl trying to teach Clark to fly while he whines like a loser about Lana being dead, if she is really dead.

ApologistPuncher said...

Of course "he's" a clueless douchebag. The fucking moron creates imaginary "victories" in his mind.

It's pretty sad this little bitch has to try to bad-mouth SUPERIOR prodcut to try to feel better about "liking" Singerman Peeps. Spiderman 3? Disappointing, but STILL better than Singerman. Smallville? Occassionally frustrating, INFINITELY SUPERIOR to Singerman Peeps.

Anyone wanna wager this guy wears Singerman Peeps Underoos, so he can go to bed at night with Brandon "My career went Routh" on his "naughty parts"???

"Why wasn't this mentioned?"

Well considering that the homepage is reporting that it looks like the Justice League movie is probably going to happen before the SR sequel, I would say that your contention that Steve younis only reports good news is a bunch of shit...But then you knew that.

"Freedom of speech is in short supply over there. "

Oh bullshit...You know damn right well that the only time people are smacked down is when they are disrespectful to the members and the site. If anything the site is very lenient with dissenting opinion as long as you do it respectfully. But I'm willing to bet that you are not capable of this, which is why you were banned, and now have a grudge against the site.

And in case you haven't noticed you have turned this site into a SHP bashing site when that's not what it's for. You guys tell us all the time how this site is for dissing Superman Returns and we should just get over it, but maybe you should take your own advice and get over your grudge against the Homepage.

"Well considering that the homepage is reporting that it looks like the Justice League movie is probably going to happen before the SR sequel"

Now that IS good news! Do you reckon Younis could not report on something as big as a "Singer sacked from sequel" type headline even if he wanted to? Of course not. Little bits like the Razzie nomination are deemed not newsworthy? Your defence of him is admirable though. Naive but admirable

"which is why you were banned"

WRONG! Again you assume too much. See you over there!

swright, Thanks for pointing the JLA news out to us, it only confirms the ridiculous Singer bias of that site. According to Variety, Warners are "actually smiling" about the first draft....and here's the best bit.."Bryan Singer’s "Superman" follow-up HAD been expected to play in 2009. But there’s no script yet for that pic, while Singer is busy getting ready to shot Tom Cruise starrer "Valkyrie" for UA."

Yeah, then Singer's supposed to do that biopic about that gay Mayor after that as well, isn't he?

The article closes with...
"The question now: Will a souped-up "Justice League" prove to be Kryptonite to Superman?"

You'd have to say a Singer Returns sequel looks to any sane person to be on very, very shakey ground now, but NO, NOT YOU KNOW WHO...he actually adds to the news this little sentence.....
"I have little doubt that the Superman project will continue to happen ahead of any "Justice League" movie."

Fuckin pathetic. He couldn't even report the article verbatim without trying to add his ridiculous Singer spin to it.

Yeah, thanks swright. I'm sure you meant to defend Younis. I hopew you're not an attorney.

Well I'll be. Nolan's screwed up Joker and now screwed up the bat suit. What a world.

I don't see the problem with Steve giving his opinion that he thinks it will still happen first? I talk to Steve a lot, and he never comes across as having a bias like you mention. In fact his views about the movie are alot like mine...I liked it, have some problems with some things, but I'm willing to see what they do for a sequel. I just don't hate it like you guys do. I find it very hard to hate any movies as passionately as some of you guys. I just can't get myself worked up over it. I like to debate about the film and get the other sides perspective(which is why I continue to come here).

However, Lana Lang on Smallville? I hate with the fire of a thousand suns. Because Smallville (a show I do like a.lot) has chosen on to many occassions to hurt the character of Clark Kent for the sake of propping up Lana fucking Lang.

Singer is a FAG and Superman Returns was gay.

A JL movie has far more obstacles in front of it then any Superman sequel. The budget for that will be massive and what about Bale? Is he a shoe in to be Batman in it after he is done with The Dark Knight. He does not strike me as the type that wants to play Batman in a million movies. He is a talented actor who i am sure will want to do other things in between Batman movies at least. What about Routh, if they don't want him in it then where do they go? Welling is not going to do it we know that, he would rather die then put the suit on.

You wouldn't. And he's basing his opinion on what? Blind faith in Singer?

"I talk to Steve a lot, and he never comes across as having a bias like you mention. In fact his views about the movie are alot like mine...I liked it"

And there you have it. No fuckin idea.

"However, Lana Lang on Smallville..."

And you bring her up because??? What the fuck has she got to do with Singerman Returns?? Go complain about Smallville to Younis. You know he likes hearing about it.

"Welling is not going to do it we know that, he would rather die then put the suit on."

...And you know that how?

The way people continue to grossly misinterpret one tiny quote from Mr. Welling (that he made some years ago) continues to amaze me.

I'll tell you one thing -- the reason he isn't "flying" and wearing anything else, may not necessarily be due to his own interest/choices -- but rather, someone else's (and I ain't talking about the showrunners).

SHALL I CAUSE ANOTHER COMMENT SECTION TO ESCALATE TO OVER 400 COMMENTS!?

HO HO HO

WB needs to come out soon and say something these rumors are getting out of hand. What are you doing guys, are you committed to another Singer Superman film or is it this Justice League movie?

Hopefully, big brother will get over their petty insecurities. Singerman has far worse problems than Routh being usurped by Welling's popularity.

Again, what makes your opinion better than STeves? It's one mans opinion, that's it. It doesn't make it right or wrong. Just like yours isn't right or wrong.

Jesus Christ on a bike. He purports to be the main Superman news site on the net YET he can't just report the news about Superman, he has to add his personal bias to it and distort other information to present his warped view.

People like you lap it up though

That's all the site does is report on Superman related items. Is it that hard to think that MAYBE he knows information that you don't since he knows people involved in the production? That, JUST MAYBE, he's making an informed opinion instead of just talking out his ass like you? Why is it so horrible that he liked the movie?

Got news for you there sport, a lot of Superman fans around the world liked the movie. If they didn't there wouldn't be talk of a sequel, and it wouldn't have beaten Batman Begins in BO take.

"That's all the site does is report on Superman related items."

Except when those items portray Singer in an unflattering light, "sport"

"Sport", another Aussie huh??

Younis is the President of the Bryan Singer Fanclub, and if he has any "inside" dirt it would come from another Singer sucker. Only brainless sheep like yourself fall for anything Younis says. You go into bat for the guy time and time again. More fool you.

You'll find similar fans of other franchises who portray themselves as that little bit more special than other fans by PRETENDING they have "contacts" and that they're learned opinion has some credibility than anyone elses.

What proof do you have that I don't work for Fox Studios in Sydney as part of the crew that were assigned to the production of Returns?? If I went to Younis and wanted to spill the beans with some tales from the troubled production, you think Younis would want to hear them?? Want to know about the shenanigans and wasteful behaviour that had many shaking their heads in disbelief, even causing the suits from Warners to fly over to see for themselves?? Want to hear about the day Younis got a studio tour?

Got news for you sport, you and your false idol Younis know jackshit

Anonymous said...

...or how about the time we all had to come back to add some action into the film at the behest of the suits from Warners??

...of course Singer's idea of action was another gay innuendo..Supes got it in the eye. Oh ho fuckin ho Bryan

Well if you had the proof you would post it here. And I have no idea if Steve would post something that was just tabloid gossip.

Are you jealous that Younis got a tour of the studio? Because I'm guessing if the head of Batman's main site lived in the city that they were shooting The Dark Knight he would get a tour also.

"Want to know about the shenanigans and wasteful behaviour that had many shaking their heads in disbelief, even causing the suits from Warners to fly over to see for themselves?? "

Yes..Provide a link to a credible news article detailing these problems.

"What proof do you have that I don't work for Fox Studios in Sydney as part of the crew that were assigned to the production of Returns??"

None, but I have no doubt if you actually did that you would have said something by now.

Of course, Steve Younis saying something makes it "credible", even if it is his OWN EXPERIENCES he's reporting. But someone on here, since he doesn't run BryanSingerHomepage.com, CAN'T be telling "true" stories??

You fucking Apologist douchebags are so fucking out of touch with reality, it's getting dangerous.
