Box Office Update: Took You Long Enough

While we've had some fun the past couple weeks looking at some of the film's ancillary revenue forms, we thought we'd peek in at the numbers that really matter once again. In it's 17th weekend at the domestic box office (i.e. a couple hundred dollar theaters), Singerman took in $173,300 and FINALLY broke the $200 million mark for a grand total of $200,006,305 year to date. Granted we fully admit that before the IMAX totals came out, we didn't think it would break that mark, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a supporter of this film that saw that one coming either.

But before Singer and Co. go throw another Halloween party, is their really any significance in hitting the $200 million mark now? Does this latest $173K really make a difference other than being able to say they hit a milestone of a nice round number? In actuality, no, not really, especially not after this length of time. We know there was speculation by some sources that the film hitting $200 million domestic was some "magic number" for a sequel, but that was largely passed off as being inaccurate by certain people in the industry. When you take into account the cost of the film to produce ($209 million) and market ($100 million), it's still glaringly obvious that the film fell well short of expectations (Alan Horn even admitted this). Whether it made $198 million or $202 million the film still has yet to make back it even come close to breaking even. MovieWeb has an interesting look at the situation:
"Superman Returns finally crossed the $200 million plateau! Congratulations. Oh yeah, the bad news. It took 117 days for it to cross that mark, 8th slowest all-time,and, oh yeah, the flick still has $70 million to go before it reaches a profit.Good luck hitting that mark, you idiots."
While we're not exactly sure who the "idiots" are, it does bring up a good point. The film still has a long way to go before it even thinks about breaking even, and even though its now hit $200 million it took almost twice along as films like Batman Begins (who it still sits over $5 million behind) and cost almost $100 million more to make and market. And since some of you have been asking, Singerman also took almost six times as long as contemporary X-men: The Last Stand (who it sits over $34 million behind domestically) and cost just slightly more to make and market.

Looking at those factors, I'd say the status of the future of the "franchise" hasn't changed over the last weekend, and still won't be determined until long after Singerman has been collecting dust on DVD shelves.

You know you really should have backed off when SR hit the dollar theatres. When it got the theatre bump it was quite clear to anyone with a functioning calculator that SR was going to make 200 mil. I really don't get your hatred for this movie. I did not love it but good god it beats the shit out of the last 2 Superman movies. Was it the greatest Superhero movie of all time, not hardly. However was it so bad it is totally unworthy of a sequel like you say, absolutely not.

Geez you must love making shit up. SR got a theatre jump a few weeks ago into dollar theatres. It's I-Max run all but ended when Open Season was released. SR has not been sitting in a couple of hundred I-Max theatres for some time now.

I am new here but let me get this straight, you are a Superman fan and you created this BLOG to bitch about the movie. Well shit man how the hell did you feel after Superman 3 and 4, were you on the verge of suicide?

Anonymous said...

You know so much of your whining has been about the films BO. What the hell would you be harping on if SR had not been released so close to Pirates. If you think Pirates did not hurt SR BO severely you must need a cat scan or something.

Anonymous said...

And I love how all of a sudden the article about the 200 million plateu now doesn't mean anything on this blog...When at the beginning of SR's run it was constantly referenced as credible and that the film wasn't going to make it..Typical hater shit..Change your story when the facts don't support your arguement.

SSS what the fuck have you ever done anyway asshole. Singer busted his ass to make a good Superman movie. You hated it great, lets hear your big fucking idea for a Superman movie instead of this whining bullshit about SR.

Actually it's what's called a typo, I had IMAX on the brain from the proceeding sentence. Thanks for pointing it out so nicely though.

So wait I cant be critical of the film unless I have my own script treatment lying around somewhere?

Actually I could probably come up with no less than 20 comics/TPB's that could've made for a better and more in character film if you must know.

What have you done BTW other than post anonymously on the blog and show your limited vocabulary skills?

I swear you haters are so ungrateful. It's not enough like the comics! Who cares? Smallville's not that much like the comic but it's still pretty good. Do I think it's pitiful that in three decades Spider-man will have faced more onscreen foes than Superman? Yes, but you have to admit that that cake Jimmy made looked delicious. Yum Yum.

Ooops I meant to say 'onscreen foes from the comic'.

If I must know, well let’s hear it genius we are all waiting with baited breath. If Singer is a fucking moron and you are so enlightened when it comes to Superman, give us your big idea for a Superman movie that would have made a billion bucks. You have nothing because you are just a jaded fan with no ideas of his own. The easiest thing in the world to do is criticize the people who work hard trying to create something for an audience. You claim to be a Superman fan, so let’s hear how SSS would have made the best Superman movie ever. Prove to us that Singer is a retard and you could have done so much better.

SSS I thought Superman Returns was sub par for Superman and nothing would make me happier than to see it get what it deserves in my view, and I've enjoyed your blog's posts... but as much as I agree that this wasn't the way to do Superman now in the year 2006 by ignoring his modern history, I think you should be the better man or woman and admit you were arrogant in your box office predicitions. Don't be like Singer and try to brush it aside. Just as his dumbass interviews are still available online, this blog's posts are and can't be changed. Be the better man or woman.

I dont understand why SSS has to be able to make a better movie than Singer in order to know that SR sucked? What does one have to do with the other? When you watch a sporting event do you have to be able to play better than the athletes to say if their not playing well?
That "well, you couldnt do better!" logic is retarded. He doesnt have to, to know he doesn't like something. It's funny to me, how unnerved some of you "fans" get by anything posted on this blog and the desperate lengths you go to to somehow and try to discredit someone else's opinion. Actually, be careful throwing out the word "them". It is actually the same 1 or 2 people coming in to stir up trouble.

And the "you can't do better" is their ONLY reply. But want to know something funny? Do any of "them" have a blog singing BS' praises, to be able to bad-mouth this one? I mean, if "they" can't make a better blog than this one, what gives "them" the right to bitch about this one?

Works both ways, nancy-boys.

Don't need a blog to sing BS's praises..The critics and pretty much the majority of every poster on the Superman websites already do that..

What the hell is SHH? Is that Superman homepage? Because the majority of the posters on that site liked the movie with only a few morons spewing the anti-Singer shit...And I don't know about the other people posting here, but I have never posted on Bluetights and I haven't been there since the video blogs stopped...

I wasn't the one that said "can you do better" but the question is valid....What would you do differently in the sequel? Can you answer without puting down SR or can you honestly express what type of Superman film would please you....

It is NOT valid. So, you can LIKE a film, and not be a director, but you can't DISLIKE a film without being one? That my friends is called HYPOCRISY.

And since this site is for people who DISLIKE THIS FILM, obviously a sequel is NOT what is looked for. Too many plot-holes opened up by BS to fix. How he thought a KID was the best way to go. Jesus.....

Anonymous said...

IT IS NOT HYPOCRISY...I'm asking an honest question..If you could write a Superman movie what would it be about? The fucking question has nothing to do with SR for christ's sake...

Anonymous said...

I know. If this were any other superhero, nobody would be praising this crap Singer's pulling. But I guess there are some people so desperate for a new superman film, they'll take anything they're given. It's the same as batman forever. Some people actually like that dumbass movie. This movie shouldn't even have gotten pass the writing stage. Fuck you, WB.

Anonymous said...

It is hypocricy. You don't have to be able to do better to be able to critique anything good or bad. But holy FUCK, yes I could do better than Singer if given the Chance. I'd having him fight something that could punch him back first of all. No dogs would eat other dogs. Clark would not wear glasses as a kid. I'd have Superman not stalk Lois. I'd get rid of the munchkin since that's just a hackneyed soap opera plot twist you can see coming without a telescope, not to mention supes should not have a bastard son. It'd be based on the modern interpretation of superman, with the modern Lex, kryptonite would work like it's goddam supposed to, and I SWEAR to you not one child would fall asleep during it. And i'd give Kal penn a character. He's a good guy, deserves better than what he got.

Anonymous said...

And absolutely 0 lines would be ripped off of Donner's film.

"And since this site is for people who DISLIKE THIS FILM, obviously a sequel is NOT what is looked for. Too many plot-holes opened up by BS to fix. How he thought a KID was the best way to go. Jesus....."

Oh please so the kid angle ruins the future of Superman movies. To many plot holes, yeah right, i saw Pirates the fucking movie had no god damn plot, just things blowing up every 3 seconds. Make the sequel action packed with lots of effects and the plot will not be a big factor, Pirates sure proved that this summer. Before you go off saying the sequel will made for a lot cheaper let me say this. If the sequel gets made i believe it will be for more or less what this film cost. I say that because WB knows they need more action in the next movie. They can't hand Singer or any other director a 150 mil budget and say give me tons more action than the orginal which cost 204 mil. I think if WB decides SR did not make enough money to approve a big budget sequel then they just won't make it. I don't for one second believe they are doing it for far less money because it won't work.

That kid needs to die. I don't care how cute he is. It's superman's story. Keep it about Superman, not fucking Sky high.

Anonymous said...

"I liked the movie I have said that here before. What I guess I just don't get is why so many of the people that didn't like it are so close minded about the sequel being any good. Look at Batman Begins, did anybody really think after Batman and Robin that a new Batman movie would be any good. Joel Schumacher did a good job with Batman Forever and then flamed out with Batman and Robin, so I don't buy the whole Singer can not do a good job on the sequel. Don't go running around calling me an apologist either, at least I have the guts to not post my thoughts anonymously. I like SR, I also get that it had flaws I am not blind to that. I just think that some of the people that hated it should be a little more open to the idea that future Superman movies with Singer could be better."

Like Singerman Peeps, your "theory" is majorly FLAWED.

I need point out only one though: Joel Schumacher did NOT make Batman Begins. So to say "Hey, Batman and Robin sucked, but Batman Begins ruled, so BS can do the same" makes ZERO sense. 2 DIFFERENT directors, 2 DIFFERENT films. Shouldn't this be obvious?

And "guts"? Your "real" name is danmankp37? Your parents must hate you more than common sense obviously does.....

Anonymous said...

"Wow where do I start in this pile of crap you just spewed out. I guess you can't read to well can you. I said Schumacher did a good job on Batman Forever and awful on Batman and Robin, that there is a comparison of the same director and two very different films. My point about Batman Begins was that many people never thought a good Batman movie would happen again after Batman and Robin a point I made that you failed to grasp. You final comment about my screen name is pathetic and cowardly. You can check this blog I have said several times that I enjoyed the movie. I am not afraid that some people will disagree with me; I will gladly defend my point of view. You want to talk trash anonymous like some wimp be my guest."

Ahh, I see. You really ARE stupid. Thanks for clearing that up.

Let me de-construct your idiotic "theory" AGAIN. See, the far superior Batman Begins was given to ANOTHER DIRECTOR. They did not say "Hey Joel, you fucked-up Batman, here's many millions MORE so you can do it AGAIN". It took an actual director with his OWN vision to bring respectability to the franchise.

No one with half a brain was thinking they could "never" make a good Batman film. Well, I'm guessing these "people" were your relatives, which makes sense in the scheme of things.

And I didn't know I needed YOUR permission to bitch-slap you all over this Blog "anonymously".

Yeah right you are like the bully that talk’s trash and then backs down when confronted. The amount of excuses you have made for your inept BO predictions shows you take virtually no accountability for your mistakes. Amen. I have a newfound respect for Nolan now after sitting through Singer's bizzaro Superman movie. Newsflash, genius SUPERMAN IS MORE THAN DONNER'S MOVIE. It's sure sign that something's wrong when a cgi head of a dead actor is the best performance in your movie. Routh just looks happy to be getting work. Spacey was sleepwalking. That kitty bitch was awful and the rest were rather bland. The whole movie is actually rather bland and sterile. Shit happens and clark throws baseballs across the world but I just don't give a damn because there's nothing happening worth giving a damn about. Damnit, you have to be really really forgiving to have enjoyed this lame film.

"I have to agree with that poster though. I read your post and took it to mean exactly what they said. I think you should be a little more clear next time."

He was very clear in what he said. He referenced Batman and Robin and Batman Forever as 2 very different movies in quality made by the same director. He then said that there was not a lot of optimism that another good Batman movie would happen after the failure of Batman and Robin. Never did he mention Schumacher as directing BB or even suggest it. I thought SR was just ok but I do disagree with so many people here saying Singer can never make a good sequel. Nobody can predict what will happen in a few years. I know many people that hated SW episode 1 and 2 then loved episode 3. Those were obviously all made by Lucas, so to me saying that Singer has no shot at making a good sequel, is just irrational thinking.

Looks like SR is getting a sequel..The deal was finalized last week..The budget will be around 140 to 175 before marketing...They also stated that the total budget for SR including marketing was 260 million...They only spent 50 million on ads...

They say that the sequel will be action packed and have supes engaged in the battle of his life with a popular DC comics baddie..

Of course without an official announcement this is still speculation, but since SSS has no problem printing speculation as fact when it is a negative article about SR I thought it would be AOK to show you guys this...

My guess is that the budget will be around 175...Just the fact that no sets have to be built is a huge budget cut...

Now yes I liked the movie, even though I didn't like some things about it, but I've always wanted Singer to have 1 more film to fix what he messed up, if he doesn't with this sequel then I will cross over to the dark side.

Anonymous said...

Well it looks like this is spreading through the net rather quickly..So if it's true the WB will make an official announcement very soon..

Now yes I liked the movie, even though I didn't like some things about it, but I've always wanted Singer to have 1 more film to fix what he messed up, if he doesn't with this sequel then I will cross over to the dark side."

Well said that is exactly how i feel about this. I am a big Superman fan, i was not in love with what i got in SR but i am willing to give Singer another shot. SSS saying constantly that Singer ruined Superman for all future movies is so baseless and ridiculous. If SR was filled with action and almost no plot like Pirates and it had made insane money, would this site even exist. Almost all his posts are about it's BO performance. He would have had to spend most of his time yelling how the movie sucks, even though it's BO is great.

Anonymous said...

yeah, while the movie had flaws, they aren't so big that they can't be fixed....The kid storyline can be fixed, the stalker thing can be fixed by just not having him ever do it again and delivering a better film..And if they are going to have Superman have a huge fight on his hands, then the to little action problem is fixed immediately.

SSS is not a Superman fan like he claims there is no way. I can certainly understand him having pre-conceived notions of what a great Superman film should be heading into SR and was let down by what he got. However he is always saying as you said that Singer killed the character and no future movies with him will work. So already when he comments on this news he will be saying the sequel will be shit and there is no point. Like he has a crystal ball and any fucking clue what will happen in the sequel. If he does have a crystal ball he should have used for his BO predictions, which he got wrong about 20 times. How a guy who says he is a Superman fan would be cheering for an upcoming Superman film to fail is beyond me. I know I was not in love with SR but I sure as hell do not want him to go away for 20 years again like last time. I am going to root for the sequel to be great and give me everything I want in a Superman movie. If SSS was a true Superman fan he would be rooting for the sequel to be great as well, not trying to tear down something that has yet to be built.

LOL. You "Apologists" are a sad, sad bunch.

We ALL know BS had so many things working against him that prevented him from making a good FIRST movie right? So of course he DESERVES to be able to do a sequel because he didn't have EVERYTHING at his disposal the first time. What's that? He had free reign? Huge budget in hand? It was his own EGO and lack of vision that prevented him from making a good film? No thanks, don't want to see this "huge fight" against Lex Luthor in a suit made out of Kryptonite, that may or may not affect Singerman, all the while throwing clumps of "land" at him.

I always love the "real Superman fan" comments. I thought the real fans stood up for what they believed in, and didnt just accept any piece of garbage as long as it has their favorite logo on it, especially after being burned once? I also never understood why people think it's Singer or nothing for the next 20 years?

For the record, I've never "rooted" for an alleged sequel to fail. In fact, I dont remember ever saying much about one, other than the fact that I didnt have faith in Singer somehow rectifying his debacle in a second film, when the first time around he had almost limitless power and cash to do great things, and served us a steaming terd.
Now with a second film, he's a slave to most of his mistakes from the 1st film b/c their now engrained in the continuity he's established. Great, he's going to add more action to the film (most likely from studio pressure) but what about everything else? He cant just ignore those plot points in a second film, it would be a joke if we were just supposed to forget about them. What's he going to do? Recast Lois, and just forget about the kid, etc.? You know and I know that aint happening. His ego wouldn't allow it.
From what they've been saying he's gonna have $30 million at minimum less to play with this time (if it's $175M). I dont quite understand how you can have "a ton more action" with less of a budget? It doesnt make any sense. Yes, I know some of the sets are already built, but there will be new sets to be built (one would hope), and the VFX will still need to be done from scratch unless they're just going to parse in the same exact scenes from the first film. He's also allegedley adding a supervilain which is also going to be effects heavy. The IESB report doesnt exactly add up at the moment.

Trust me, they can't see 'the big picture' that's why they don't care. They can't see how many decades have passed since the Reeve movies. They can't see how unnecessary it is to piggy-back a superman film on them TODAY. They can't see how out of character Superman was in the film. They can't see how giving superman a bastard kid will affect his franchise. They can't see how hackneyed and stupid the plot was. They can't see beyond the purddy fx.
They can't see some scenes because the film was too dark. They can't see that in 30 years supes has faced wig wearing luthor 4 times on film. They just don't want to. They can't see how Singer's as subtle as a bullhorn. They can't see how I'd trade every ounce of Kitty's blood for some better superman film.

First of all buddy it is Singer or nothing for the next 20 years. WB invested a shitload of money in restarting this franchise they are not starting over again for a very long time. Secondly you talk about this film as if it is universally panned by critics and audiences alike. SR received very good reviews far better than what Pirates and X3 got and it made more money than Batman Begins, which is also getting a sequel. So what are you saying exactly that because some fans feel slighted by this film, that means they should have no faith in the sequel. There are about a million examples of sequels being superior to the original. I love this crap about plot points in SR that will kill the sequel. Has anyone actually seen and paid attention to Pirates. The movie is 2 plus hours of shit blowing up with almost no plot to speak of whatsoever and it made a gazillion bucks at the BO. I am a huge fan of Superman, i have read the comics all my life and i liked SR, could have been better but i liked it. Even if i hated it, never in a million years would i root for a sequel to fail. I will support the film until it comes out and if i don't like it then i will trash it, not before.

More hypocricy. It's ok to support (whatever that means) a film you haven't seen but not ok to critizise it of course. Singer could make a movie about wild monkey sex and someone somewhere would 'support' it. Just keep going around the merry go round, guys. When Superman's Kid is having his wacky adventures at the playground in the sequel, you'll be the only one in the theater clutching your SR dvd, putting it down your pants and humping it before climaxing all over it and then licking it clean as Superboy does the billionth jesus referrence and plays a duet with Kitty.

Enjoy it you zealots.

Good Point but it didn't stop the haters from doing it for the first film...One look at the new suit and these people never gave it a chance..

Anonymous said...

You know what makes me laugh is these people that say that Singer is too arrogant to make any changes in the sequel. What proof do you have of that exactly. Singer does not have a history of bad relationships with studios in regards to his films. Obviously he sat down with WB and talked about what they need to improve upon for the sequel. Some people here talk about him like he is an idiot as a director. This guy is 42 years old and has been a major director in hollywood since his early 30's. You don't get to that position in life at that age by being a fucking idiot. Give him a chance in the sequel to make it batter.

Anonymous said...

Even more hypocricy. It's ok to hope Singer doesn't screw up again but not ok to know he probably will.

People who didn't like SR aren't against another Superman movie anyway. Just against continuing this crappy story.

I won't be seeing Tim story's next Fantastic four movie because I thought the first movie sucked. Hence, I'm not wasting my money on MORE from a director I think sucks at making superhero movies. That's called common sense...

Here's the thing, you mental midgets: We have seen BS' "vision", so we CAN start to form a mental picture of what his next turkey will be like. Are you geniuses actually saying no one could have guessed there would be spaceships in Empire? Or lightsabers in Jedi? Of course they did, because the first film set PRECEDENT.

And yes, the hypocrites WILL think the sequel is going to be "good", but try to silence anyone who thinks, rightfully so, that it will stink. It's just their way.

------------
The point we are tying to make is that GL made AOTC..It wasn't liked, and yet he came out with ROTS. A movie that every Star Wars fan had been waiting for, and pretty much every Star Wars fan loved. From what we are hearing the Sequel is going to have Superman finally going up against one of his Comic Book foes. This is what everyone has been wanting to see...Yes it could end up being a turkey, but it could also end up being miles better(and remember most critics loved this film)than SR.

I'm just not going to trash a film that hasn't even been fucking written yet.

Oh and Uwe Boll is no where near BS's league as a director. Uwe Boll is not respected in the film industry, BS is very respected.

Here's where your "theory" is proven wrong yet again:

Attack of the Clones: Domestic: $310,676,740 47.8%
+ Foreign: $338,721,588 52.2%
= Worldwide: $649,398,328

Singerman Peeps: Domestic: $200,022,181 51.3%
+ Foreign: $190,000,000 48.7%
= Worldwide: $390,022,181

So AOTC was liked by FAR more people than Singerman.

And open your eyes and use that little cornut you call a brain and see NO ONE is "trashing" any film, they are trashing the bullshit ideas BS is SURE to bring to it. He sucks, and so does anyone who likes his tripe.

And we all know that only gay....I mean same sex oriented people wear bow ties. In the next Superman Returns Returns love that title. It will be revealed that superman was molested by Zod when he was a boy and that his kid has aids. Dude what is your fucking problem?..I honestly forgot what you were referring to that's all....Why can't you have an intelligent discussion without resorting to insults? That poll isn't that new..I voted in it a while ago and I voted for SR..Because the way I saw the poll it was talking about Box Office...

And I'm sorry but that little chart I told you about is fucking updated daily, and Superman Returns only leaves the top 1 or 2 spots when a new movie comes out during its first week...After it's initial weekend Superman Returns goes right back to 1 or 2..

And you can spin it however you want, but the fact that the majority of BOM visitors gave SR an A or a B is telling..It means that your bullshit arguement that the majority of the fans hated this film is completely wrong.

I await your insulting rebuttal.

I don't see how that proves him wrong at all. The SR sequel does not have to make Episode 2 kind of money to be a hit. Spiderman is the only Supehero that pulls in that kind of cash. Episode 2 was pretty hated but being a Star Wars movie it still made a lot. I agree with a great supervillain, coming to metropolis, that is something Superman fans have been waiting for, with all the great modern effects.

Unfortunately the "online fans" dont make up even close to a majority of the audience so your internet polls really mean little either way. Interent polls are an inherently skewed sample since theyre not random and certain sects of people go out of their way to vote in those things, and the number of votes those things get dont even come close to the amount of people that actually see a film.

The only thing you can really look at to quantify who liked something is did they pay to see it or not. Judging by the films B.O. vs the insane amount of advertising out there, the public seemed largely indifferent to the film.

My respect-o-meter just went waaaaaaay the hell up for this guy from AICN. Mirror's my thoughts exactly. WHY CAN'T PEOPLE RECOGNIZE THAT THE FACT THAT A SUPERMAN MOVIE MADE TODAY NEEDS ITS OWN LITTLE SQUAD OF INTERNET DEFENDERS MEANS SOMETHING WENT WRONG...

The sequel needs a complete overhaul. Just forget Superman Returns ever happened and start fresh like Batman Begins. Don't come here and give me that "wait and see" crap. I know what I want and I know what superman deserves, and it is NOT what Singer has to offer.

Every movie of this size has people on the internet fighting like cats and dogs, what you think SR is the first to to start this trend. People were fighting about X3 and yes even the almighty BB which SR made more money than.

If this is your way of saying that i am dead wrong you have been spending too much time on this blog. You want to talk about spin, okay lets talk about spin. SR made almost 400 mil WW 20 plus mil more than BB yet you guys say audiences hated it. SR had ten time the competiton BB had, if you think BB makes 205 domestic up against Pirates like SR was, you should consult a doctor about a catscan immediately. I leave Spiderman out of the equation because that is on another level in terms of BO. No other Superhero movie has even come close to what Spiderman has brought in. I suggest you visit multiple sites around the web and you will see the reaction to SR is more positive than negative.

I'm sure that's why this blog exists then.

Oh don't throw that feces at me. You know what Batman was up against. You know how terrible Batman and Robin was. And it's interesting how you don't mention its budget when you say SR made more. Let's do some real spinning and say X3 made more so it's reaction was more positive.

Come back to me when you have something worth discussing, son.

It's sad that you have to stoop to insulting the guy which in turn makes you no better than any of the "Singer is GAY" knuckleheads on this blog. I dont see SSS coming in these threads and tossing insults at people.

BTW I have a blog of my own and update it much more frequently than SSS updates this one. I just did a cursory look of the blog over the last 3 months and it averages about 2 posts a week which isnt very time consuming, so that criticism seems a bit misguided as well.

And it's Superman who's on an entirely different level of popularity than Spider-man, not the other way around. It's a disgrace that Superman can't even make a dent in Spider-man's numbers.

Ask anyone before SR came out how much it would make and you'd NEVER get the number it has now. That's a fact. Everyone knew that something would have to be really really foul about Superman's big return to the theaters for it not to easily make a killing... now of course everyone's doing the backpeddal in unison. It's hilarious.

I thought it would make more than that but the fact that it didn't does not make it a bad film. SR opening weekend pretty much proves that the character is not as popular as many of us thought. There was no reason for it not to open big, the reviews for the film were quite good. The superhero genre has been flooded in recent years. You guys say hey it is Superman like it is special. Unfortunately for a lot of people Superman is just another Superhero.

Every Singerfan was an arrogant dipshit before this movie came out.

It's kinda funny watching them run around trying to protect their lord Singer from the Superman fans he's scorned with his film.

keep it up, guys. I'm sure you'll convince someone to abandon all hope that superman can be done better.

Anyway, who here can't wait to see Nolan's next batman?

Oh and ya gotta love that sandman. He aint gonna eat no dogs. LOL

Anonymous said...

Arrogant is right. "finally superman done right!" "no more wigs" was all I was reading before this movie came out.

And now what?

Anonymous said...

Is it arrogant to expect that the film would have done better than it did? I don't think so...I personally thought it would have no problem hitting 300 million..I really thought Superman could pull in a big audience, but for some reason it didn't draw...And regardless of what fanboys say it's not that he was stalking Lois or even has a kid...SR's opening weekend was not as high as they thought...For some reason people stayed away...It wasn't word of mouth at that time because the movie hadn't been out...And I'm sure that since it wasn't a slam banging action pic that it didn't make the teenagers flock to see it when they had that film with a Pirate as a choice...

A lot of things factored into the dissapointing box office...Story, lack of action, Pirates, Superman just may be out of style right now with today's Marvel generation...It isn't any one thing...

Anonymous said...

Yes it is. The movie was weak.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe I'm doing this since I hated SR but lois was right in the movie, "Everyone loves superman"

You people saying that he's just not cool today are trying to find the most ridiculous excuse possible for why the movie underperformed.

Every studio wishes it had a star like supes to put in theaters to instantly market itself to the audience. Singer just blew it... He rehashed donner's movie and added a kid.

Don't deny it.

That is very true, Spiderman exploding the way it did opened the floodgates in terms of Superhero pics. The biggest problem this genre has is overseas they do not make a lot of money. Spiderman made over 400 mil overseas in both movies but since, 2000 no other Superhero movie has even made 250 overseas. BB last year performed awful overseas only 166 mil which is bad even for a Superhero movie. SR made 190, better but not great. X3 made about 225, pretty good but not great. The other 2 X-men movies did not make anywhere close to 250 overseas either. There is a ton of pressure for these movies to really rake it in domestically because overseas the big bucks are just not being made.

Anonymous said...

"so you're saying Singerman came late to the party and then puked in the punchbowl?"

I'm saying a lot of these kinds of movies will continue to make less and less because the genre is getting played out. It is like the action movies in the 80's, with Stallone and Schwarzenegger, they were huge hits for a while. Come the mid 90's however, these kind of movies were played out and nobody cared anymore.

Excuses excuses.

You're saying Catwoman and Batman and Robin bombed because superheros aren't popular anymore. There are just too many?

They bombed because they sucked. SR failed WB because it sucked. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.

Batman Begins had a steep hill to climb to wipe away the shit stain of the last movie and IT DID. It's budget was smaller than SR so it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more profitable.

Stop hunting for excuses because Superhero movies have only BEGUN their run. We've got more sequels coming from marvel and WB and new well known iconic heros like Wonderwoman on the way so you have to be an idiot to think it's over for superheros at the movies.

I can't wait to see all these other heros come out and completely fly pass SR's numbers. Oh yes!

Anonymous said...

"And it's Superman who's on an entirely different level of popularity than Spider-man, not the other way around."

What are you baseing that on exactly. That may be true in the comic world but clearly it is not the case on the big screen. Go to BOM, where they factor in the inflation of older movies. Even with inflation neither of the original 2 Superman movies come close to what Spiderman 1 and 2 pulled in. You could make the case easily that in the comic world Batman, is superior to Spiderman, yet again with the exception of the first Batman, factoring in inflation, no other Batman movie has come close to Spiderman. Your statement is quite flawed on many levels.

Wonderwoman, watch that sink like a fucking stone, i hope they made that cheap. The other posters logic is accurate. When you flood the marketplace with a certain genre, the public after a while becomes rather disinterested in it.

I am curious to see how the Dark Knight does in 2008. If it is as good as BB than you would think it would make more money. However in spite of how many people rave about it, 205 mil at the BO and 371 mil WW is not exactly a blockbuster.

Anonymous said...

No kidding someone here brought up inflation before, the original Batman adjusted for Inflation would sit at about 400 mil domestic alone. That is 29 mil more than what BB made WW. I really think that audiences looked at both SR and BB as restarts to all but dead franchises. We'll see if the Dark Knight makes a lot more than the original as well as SR 2 making more than SR.

Anonymous said...

"I really think that audiences looked at both SR and BB as restarts to all but dead franchises. We'll see if the Dark Knight makes a lot more than the original as well as SR 2 making more than SR."

I agree a lot of people here keep talking about SR budget compared to BB. Yes SR cost a lot more money to make but audiences do not factor that in when they are deciding whether or not to see a movie. You can't say BB was loved by audiences and SR was hated by audiences when SR made more money than BB, it doesn't make sense.

Anonymous said...

Just please never post seriously again. You sound too stupid.

Superman has been around A LOT longer than spider-man. THAT'S only one of the major reasons Spider-man's not where he is on the popularity scale.

Superman is also widely known as an American ICON.

your pitiful box office numbers bullshit argument is like a goddam annoying fruit fly next to the long standing FACT that Superman is a juggernaut amongst all other Superheros. He's the king. Spidey, I'd say is the prince...

So please get the fuck off this blog.

Don't backpeddal too much, you might hurt yourself.

I'd love to have known what your thoughts on comic superhero box office potential if Superman was sitting on a billion right now.

replace that one with this one:

My mistake.

I guess I should respond to the batman one then. Don't pretend that Batman begins was the first batman movie ever made. That's all I'll say to that.

Don't act like an idiot. You know very well what his point is. Batman and Robin didn't come out two decades ago. It came out in 1997. 9 years ago. In my lifetime in fact and I'm only 17. That's a huge reason why Batman Begins had a harder time than SR... that and Batman is a darker character so he doesn't have as wide an audience as Superman.

If you're trying to argue that Superman isnt the greatest superhero of all time, then I don't know what to say to that. That's just so absolutely ridiculous. Superman should be pulling in spidey numbers right now but of course Singer lacked any originality and made a poor depressing superman movie so it can't really contend with spidey. I see no other legitimate reason why else superman can't easily own the webhead at the box office.

Anonymous said...

Ever heard of a strawman argument? Because that's what that was and nothing more. No one ever said Superman made more than spidey at the box office because it's not true. Things were different back when superman came out a billion so their box office isn't even comparable, more theater counts etc. So stop acting like a child and grow up for discussion with us adults.

What he's saying is Superman's on a level of popularity that Spidey is not and that is 100%.

Superman is modern myth. Superman is Americana. Superman is a legend.

Spidey's good too but he aint that good.

Your are the one that is acting like an idiot. Do i believe that Superman is the greatest Superhero of all time, sure i do. However the BO data does not support that arguement. Forget SR and BB for a minute, no Superman movie has ever outgrossed any Batman movie before SR outgrossed BB. Check BOM and look at the inflation increases in the two franchises. The first 2 Superman movies were close to the fist 2 Batman movies but did not make as much. The last 2 Superman movies were really bad so i won't count them as much but Batman and Robin was bad and it made good money still. I say again there is a difference between saying Superman is the greatest comic book hero ever and him being the biggest BO draw. Numbers are numbers guys and by the numbers Batman and Spiderman have both consistantly been a bigger draw at the BO than Superman, this is not my opinion it is a FACT.

Superman 4 was very cheaply made also, so i would pretty much take it totally out of the equation, it never had a chance to succeed. Superman 3 WB was still spending the money on the effects and it pretty much bombed. Batman Forever outgrossed Supes 3 by a mile. You are right by the numbers Superman at the BO is third in line behind Batman and Spiderman. Comic book popularity he is no.1 but at the BO that has not been the case.

I should be 7'0 feet tall and dunking over Lebron James, guess what ain't gonna happen. Understand this, No Superman movie in history has ever outgrossed the orginal Spiderman at the BO.
Check the numbers even factoring in inflation he is NO.3 behind Spidey and Batman.

Since we are talking about Spidey I found this at Rottentomatoes.com

"Peter Parker finds out about a Spider-Man movie being made and goes to the set to check it out. Avi Arad and Sam Raimi have cameos as the producer and director. Quentin Beck is the movie's special FX guy."

Are they seriously going to have a movie within a movie storyline? Ok then.

I hope Raimi and his team were paying attention to Superman 3. Coming off 2 great movies does not guarantee a great third, they had better be careful.
